There was one result in particular at the weekend that made everyone do a double-take – Aironi Rugby’s victory over Biarritz.
It wasn’t just their first win in the Heineken Cup, it was their first win ever. A new team this season, Aironi have toiled in the Magners League without a single victory. Whilst Benetton Treviso, the other Italian side in the league, have only lost once at home, their compatriots have been struggling at the bottom of the table.
So what better way to announce themselves as a potential force to be reckoned with. Last year’s Heineken Cup runners-up arrive with their star-studded side and score a couple of unanswered tries. ‘Usual story’ most people were thinking, but somehow Aironi forced their way back into the game and came back to win by a point.
The final whistle sparked glorious scenes at the Stadio Zaffanella, and the highlights are worth watching. There’s even Italian commentary which sets the scene nicely – listen out for the mentions of James Marshall, which is all I could understand.
