Amlin Challenge Cup Predictions: Round 6

mat gilbert
It’s the final round of Amlin Challenge Cup pool fixtures this weekend, and with only the winner of each pool going through there is still plenty to play for in most pools. Bath and Wasps are the only teams to already have qualified, leaving three pools still competitive. Newcastle can progress if Brive slip up, but at home to winless Calvisano that seems like a bit of a long shot.

London Irish and Stade Fran├žais are currently equal on points in Pool 5, and with both sides playing minnows this weekend they should pick up the maximum – that would see Stade qualify on the difference between them in the games played against each other. Finally, Pool 1 is the most interesting, with Sale travelling to Biarritz currently four points ahead of the Basque side. Bonus points could be vital in that one.

SuperBru predictions:
Newcastle Falcons v Bucharest Wolves: Newcastle by 10
Brive v Calvisano: Brive by 30
Bath v Borgeaux Begles: Bath by 20
Mogliano v Dragons: Dragons by 32
Lusitanos XV v Stade Fran├žais: Stade by 61
Grenoble v Bayonne: Grenoble by 3
I Cavalieri Prato v London Irish: London Irish by 35
Worcester Warriors v US Oyonnax: Worcester by 7
Biarritz v Sale Sharks: Biarritz by 2
London Wasps v Viadana: Wasps by 62

Do you agree? How do you see the weekend going?

  1. Off to the Bath game tonight – we need a TBP win to finish as top seeds, and have fielded a very strong squad, whilst 15 of Bordeaux’s 23 are the same as when we beat them at home. So I think Bath by 20 sounds pretty reasonable.

At home, I actually think Wasps will win by more!

  2. I may be wrong but I’m not convinced that there will be much of a Wasps team out this weekend. This is a perfect week to rest players. We’ve won the group and we are home against a team we put 90 points on at their place.

Expect us to win comfortably still with whatever team we send out.

I’d like Wasps to have a real go at this tournament. Let’s be honest, we are unlikely to get top 4, and without a European competition it doesn’t look like 6th is worth much. I would rather we put some focus on winning this tournament – which I believe we can do.

    1. If you get a TBP win (which you will), and we (Bath) don’t, you’ll be top seeds on virtue of points difference. Worth going all-out for?

      1. Probably not worth going all out for. I’d expect us to pick up a TBP win anyway, whichever team we put out. But then I also expect Bath to pick up a TBP as well.

I have no idea who we are likely to face in the next round mind you; who are the two options depending on seeding?

        1. Looks like Brive or Irish await the top seeds. Second will face the worst HC dropdown – not sure of the permutations…

  3. As a waspie I woud have liked to have seen a weaker bath team put out, especially with the weather report, could have had a chance of them not getting the TBP. Even now it’s possible, but I hope we have a good game with the EPS guys going well, I’d love for Ford to put over all his kicks including tricky ones.
