It has to be a Saracens v Exeter final next week, surely? Here are my predictions for the semi-finals this weekend.
Saracens v Wasps
Sarries have won four of their last five matches against Wasps, including a 23-point win away from home in January. Wasps won by 20 points at the Ricoh last season, and there was that ridiculous 23-64 scoreline in 2016, but as the Superbru historic results show, those bucked the general trend.
Add to this the fact that Saracens have won their last four Premiership matches by an average margin of 43 points, and I’m finding it hard to see how Wasps can win this semi-final, but judging by those past results, it could be a fun, high-scoring affair.
Saracens by 9
Exeter v Newcastle
This match looks even more straightforward on paper, and indeed the bookies are giving the hosts a 15-point handicap, but Newcastle have been so impressive this season that perhaps even a win at Sandy Park isn’t beyond them. The Falcons beat the Chiefs at Sandy Park, and they’ll be full of confidence after all the plaudits that have been coming their way.
However, away wins in the Premiership semi-finals are extremely rare. This is Exeter’s third home semi-final in a row, and they beat heavyweights Saracens and Wasps in those, and it would be a huge shock for Newcastle to reach the final. Not impossible, but I’m not predicting it will happen.
Exeter by 7
I’m so confident in two home wins that I have a double with Leovegas, at a rather measly 1.35, but that’s still not a bad return on such a banker.
