Toulon became the first team to win the European Cup final three years in a row, defeating Clermont Auvergne 24-18 in an absorbing game at Twickenham. There were stand-out solo tries from Nick Abendanon and Drew Mitchell, but in the end it was Toulon’s greater composure, allied to some poor goal-line defence and discipline from Clermont, that made the difference. The previous night, Gloucester had won the Challenge Cup final, defeating Edinburgh 19-13 just down the road at the Stoop. They prevailed for a dogged victory despite a red card for centre Billy Meakes. You can watch highlights of the game here.
