England Team Manager Martin Johnson today revealed his 32-man Elite Player Squad for the 2010/2011 season.

  1. Martin Johnson grown a pair? No Deacon or borthwick? Genius – but who’d have thunk it. A man so stubborn he gives mules a bad name has finally realised what we and every other coach in world rugby knows – if you are good enough, you are young enough…

  2. Very impressed by Johnno’s decision to exclude certain players, however I am confused as to why Robshaw, DWS and Barkley have not been included. Fingers crossed that we can now build on the pro’s from the summer tour and create an exciting team/squad, which is able to compete in the rwc and future matches/tournaments

  3. Barkley hasn’t even made the Saxons squad???????????? Johnson has taken a big step by demoting Borthwick but must now follow this up with choices like Barkley

  4. I thought that Barkley played well on tour – I think he deserves a Saxons spot – is he injured or something?

Really disappointed that Robshaw isn’t included in the EPS…

  5. Can’t say I’m too surprised Barkley isn’t with the seniors, seems strange to not even give him a Saxons spot though.

Very happy to see Attwood, PDJ and Waldouck in and Tait and Monye out. Some 50:50 decisions elsewhere but I suppose it’s a good thing there’s now competition for places.

Mears out seems harsh, especially for Chuter and Hartley.

  6. OB made some comments about the management not liking his style of rugby before the Maori game I think – i reckon he has paid the price for this – Johnson is not one to forgive players talking out of school I reckon

  7. Where’s the punditry Rugby Blog – big news and over a day old now – come on, give us some opinion!

  8. Sorry Garnetto, I’m in Uganda at the moment, and the rest of the team have the usual time commitments, but we are preparing for a long season starting from August.

I’m surprised that Borthwick has been dropped, but let’s hope this is a continuation of the turning point we saw in Australia. No Deacon either, so our Six Nations starting locks are both out!

No Dowson, Robshaw or Barkley, which I think is a mistake, and what is Matt Massive But No Gas Banahan doing there?

  9. finally those dopes borthwick and deacon are gone all he needs to realise now is danny cipriani is englands best fly half and we will be a strong side

  10. Out of interest, is Matt Stevens back playing from the beginning of the season?? If so, surprised not to see him in either squad… relishing the battle between Stevens and Cole for the 3 shirt.

  11. Stevens will be able to play again as of the 18th Jan 2011 and I’m sure he will be snapped up by some team asap, though I am not sure if Johnno will ever want him to feature within his squad, especially with the likes of Cole coming through

  12. He’s already signed with Sarries… so he will be straight back into GP. Probably too close to the WC to force his way in without some sort of prop injury emergency

  13. On a personal level I feel sorry for Borthwick because, for all his dull platitudes in the media, he seems a decent bloke. But as a player he has never looked to me to be up to international standard. He had one very good game in the 6 Nations (can’t remember who against) but one swallow doesn’t make a summer. This squad has much more dynamism and hopefully the coaches have realised the errors of their ways to the extent that they will let it flourish.

Think Barkley has been hard done by as not sure Flood has enough about him to run an international on his own and our midfield looks very straight up and down. Think Dan Ward Smith as a bench option and an athletic alternative to Nick Easter would have been good and at least one of Robshaw and Dowson should have been in for Worsley. I just worry that the retention of players like Worsley are as a get out clause so that the management team can return to the same old drudgery if their nerve fails them about the younger lads.

Still, overall a step in the right direction.
