Croft called up as Flannery ruled out

As ‘tom’ put it in a recent comment, ‘the cast list is changing on a daily basis’ – we knew there would be injuries, but to see so many miss out before boarding the plane is disappointing.

Alan Quinlan’s appeal has failed and Tom Croft has been given the call-up as expected, but this news has been overshadowed, first by the news that Leigh Halfpenny will miss the first half of the tour, and now that Jerry Flannery will miss the whole lot.

Flannery has damaged ligaments in his elbow and will not travel to South Africa on Sunday – there are only a few days for a replacement to be named and prepared, so that announcement will have to take place today or tomorrow.

So who will it be? Rory Best appears to be the early favourite, although I’d like to see Ross Ford given the nod, and the Scot was actually in one of my early Test XVs. How about world cup-winner Steve Thompson?!

  1. Just heard that the replacements for Flannery and Halfpenny will not be made until tomorrow.

Stand by for news on The Rugby Blog after they are announced.

  2. ross ford and james hook are in. hook owes his call partly to lack of kicking options beyond ROG and st jones. 3 kickers in a squad playing twice a week still seems like the bare minimum…
