Crowd-Sourced England Team for Autumn Internationals 2018

Jonny May

Following our article last week inviting you to select your England team, we can reveal the results, which represent a crowd-sourced team selection that might help to steer Eddie Jones in the right direction.

Some might say he has lost the crowd in 2018, and so picking a team along these lines might restore some faith.

1. Alec Hepburn
2. Jamie George
3. Kyle Sinckler
4. Maro Itoje
5. Courtney Lawes
6. Brad Shields
7. Tom Curry
8. Ben Morgan

9. Ben Youngs
10. Owen Farrell
11. Jonny May
12. Manu Tuilagi
13. Henry Slade
14. Chris Ashton
15. Elliot Daly

This is also quite close to Henry’s selection from earlier today, with Owen Farrell at 10 and Tuilagi and Slade in the centres. What do you think of this line up?

How close do you think Eddie’s selection will be on Thursday?

  1. I think given the lack of experience in the pack, maybe Hartley would be a good presence in the starting XV, with George off the bench to let loose as he does. Having said that I haven’t watched any of Hartley since his return to rugby – anyone got any comment on how he has been playing?

Big call on the centres – whilst I would think Farrell, Tuilagi, Slade may be our best current option, this is with Tuilagi fit. If he does get injured, which is more than 50% likely in the run up to the World Cup, England has used its potential World Cup preparation games in a system it won’t use, as I would think Ford would come back in. Glad I’m not Eddie!

  2. I have to agree that EJ will go with what he knows as much as possible.
For me, Sinckler has hit a wall and needs to find a way of developing his game. I know he had a good Lions tour but since then he’s stagnated for me. The same can be said of George. Much as I think we should have found an able deputy for Hartley by now, George has never lived up to expectations. EJ needs to widen his net to hook a better catch! (sorry).
Manu is a big call. My fear is that ,if picked , he’ll take too much on himself to try and prove his worth. I hope EJ and the backs coaches have thought about this.
So, we’ll see what we will see come saturday. Come on boys!

  3. Has this selection been forwarded on to Jones then? Or perhaps he’s already a TRB reader? Anyway, we now know that Lawes & Morgan won’t feature, but to discard the captain, to be reeaced by whom?, is wreckless. The unimpressive Slade (in SA) is an unnecessary gamble, as is the the untried Tui (early rotation @ best if nec for me). Farrell & Daly are surely sounder & more astute bets in midfield. This also leaves the fullback posi open for the reliable Brown. I’d also have the more versatile Care to start. Am unsure whether Shields’, with his lineout ability, outweights the merits of Wikson inclusion @ 6. And lit looks like another novice, Mercer, will be @ 8 then. Otherwise, the team perhaps looks as reasonably tickerty boo as it might be? Of course Jones is going on to pick a different team anyway… presumably announced tomorrow?
