As you say though, he was right and of course, had enough positives in the bag from an England perspective to make up for his lack of tact in airing his views on Ashton.

Despite his reduced involvement this time around, Lol was still responsible for a number of my favourite moments of RWC 2007.

They showed him on TV a few times before games when he was on the bench. During the warm-up he was holding tackle bags for the starting XV to run at, screaming his head off and red in the face. A true pro – if he could only be a replacement he wouldn’t sulk about it, he’d just be the best replacement he could be and do all he could to influence the boys that were going to be on the field. A class act.
