Dan Carter out for 8 weeks

Dan Carter will be out of action for New Zealand after the news that he needs surgery on his ankle.

Whilst the Tri-Nations is already won and the All Blacks have just one game to play, Carter’s involvement in their tour to the Northern Hemisphere could be in jeopardy.

Carter has been stuggling with the niggle all season and has still played on throughout for the Crusaders and New Zealand, but the team doctor confirmed that it had reached the stage where surgery was required.

  1. At the risk of offending any Kiwi fans, Carter’s absence to initiate NZ’s slide from the peak of form and let slip their vice-like grip on the 2011 William Webb Ellis trophy…?

  2. Without him they’ll be vulnerable in the World Cup. Are they going to wrap their players up in cotton wool and risk not testing themselves in the lead-up to RWC? It’s happened before!! I’m nervous for them.

  3. No offence taken :-).

For Carter or McCaw to be absent in the RWC would definitely be a major blow to the ABs. Last year the ABs were a whole different (for the worse) team when Carter was out with Stephen Donald and co failing to step up to the mark. With Carter there the whole team just plays better. At the same time though I think it’s better for this too happen this year and give Aaron Cruden the chance to step up and get some valuable experience prior to the RWC.

Still, a year is a long time in rugby and anything can happen. You’d be a brave (read silly) man to place any bets this far out.

  4. I don’t know much about Aaron Cruden, so interested to see how he gets on, assuming he plays.

Tana is right, a year is a long time. Hopefully the operation will sort it straight away, and it won’t rumble on throughout their RWC preparations…
