England call up Charlie Hodgson

Charlie Hodgson has been called up to the Senior England Elite Player Squad as precautionary cover for Jonny Wilkinson, who took a knock to his head during the match against Scotland on Saturday.

Jonny and Ugo Monye are both being treated and regularly reviewed by the England medical staff, and are both said to be making ‘good progress’.

It’s a shame that the England management won’t look towards younger, more exciting players such as Shane Geraghty, seeing injuries as an opportunity rather than a setback requiring damage limitation.

  1. What is it with the selection policy of only picking replacements from out of form former has beens, this game has no meaning will all think that England are dire and that MJ is totally out of his depth. Hodgson was a decent player in his time but he is playing for a team that are bottom of the prem table. Confused with this selection policy.

  2. I just came to the blog to see what was new and seeing that headline has just made my heart sink and the words “Oh FFS” just flew out of my mouth!

Did anyone see the little feature on Sale on The Rugby Club the other week? Hodgson was interviewed and basically blames their whole malaise on players leaving and not being replaced. Johnno clearly saw his ability to play crap then blame others and retreat in to denial when pressed by the media and thought “he’s a natural choice for my England team”.

Especially so when you consider that in the Ireland game Saint Jonny decided to have a little rest and not defend and let Bowe run straight down his channel – that’s what Hodgson does best.

Totally correct to pick him ahead of Geraghty of course – Geraghty is playing for an in form side with good players around him. However, he did make a bit of a mistake with one of his kicks from hand in the autumn so let’s exclude him at every opportunity for all eternity.

Good old Charlie has a great record against the French doesn’t he? Anyone remember when we played them in 2005 at HQ? Two tries to none and we still lost the game due to several missed kicks at goal by our Charlie who blamed it on the wind. Meanwhile Yachvili kicked 6 from 6 – the wind must have stopped momentarily for all of his kicks of course.

  3. Stepen Myler anyone? Why because he kicks at 90% and simply because he did the job for the Saxons as well. And he is picked above Geraghty lately at Saints. Nevertheless it can be anyone as long as it is a young prospect bringing some new and fresh blood ton the squad. My goodness does Martin Johnson really not look at premiership games or what?
