England call up Corbisiero and Simpson-Daniel

England today added two players to the squad preparing for the RBS 6 Nations match against Italy at Twickenham on Saturday.

London Irish prop Alex Corbisiero comes in for Tim Payne (London Wasps) who has returned to his club for treatment to a sternum injury.

Gloucester Rugby wing James Simpson-Daniel has been added to the group training at Pennyhill Park as cover for Nick Abendanon (toe). Bath Rugby full back Abendanon remains with the squad for further assessment.

Payne and Abendanon were unlikely to be involved anyway, but at least now there’s an outside chance of Sinbad returning for top-level honours.

What changes do you think should be made for this week’s game?

  1. I’m boring myself with this one now, but as good a rugby player as Cueto is, he’s not scoring tries and we’ve got plenty of wingers waiting in the, er, wings.

Watched the game with v knowledgeable father-in-law, and he’s a big fan of Hape… I want to be, but can’t quite bring myself to be so. Not brilliant with ball in hand, and it was him that stepped out of the line to create the dog-leg that allowed Stoddart to score – but, then, who have we got to replace him?

  2. Rory, although Cuato is not scoring tries, you can’t deny the fact that he contained Williams very well in the Wales match and there is not doubt that his experience brings a lot to the squad. But i do agree wih you in that we should try out some of the new younger wings but play them on the bench rather than start them. Personally i would suggest swaping someone like Varndell for Shaw to add a bit more pace to the team.

  3. Your father-in-law can’t be that knowledgeable, lovely chap though I’m sure he is. Hape was England’s worst player by a street on Friday. Flutey is not being picked on the grounds that he is in poor form for his club. But Hape has been as well. And I’d rather have an out of form Flutey than an out of form Hape. Or than an in-form Hape if I’m honest.

    Sinbad…Hallelujah.

  4. Delighted for Corbs. Awesome talent. Hope he somehow gets in the squad (can play loose or tighthead).

  5. Grudgingly Cueto was ok on friday.
he does have the best kicking game of any winger we have and defends well. his pass for Ashys try was on the money.

but sinbad is a better player and should be on our bench as an impact player.

hes too good not to be!

  6. Ha, F-I-L really is v knowledgeable (played 12 at county level etc and is rugby mad) but I did spend a majority of the 80 minutes biting my tongue at the praise he was giving Hape – think he just gets a soft spot for players he feels get a lot of undue criticism… though I think Hape deserves quite a bit more criticism than he gets.

Agree that it would be v harsh to drop Cueto at this stage, but I would like someone like Sinbad (or Strettle or Ojo) to come off the bench for him around the 55/60 minute mark

  7. Instead of dropping Cueto, what about moving him to 13 and having JSD on the wing? Or is that too far fetched and a stupid idea?

Everyone knocks Hape – i personally think he’s alright. Johnno likes him because of his defence and offloading game. The problem is, he hasn’t got a 13 outside him supporting his runs and so his offloading game is conpletely useless. I don’t mind having Hape at 12, but partnered with Tindall equals a crap combination.
