Stuart Lancaster has deemed the following eight players surplus to requirements ahead of England’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland at the weekend.

Matt Banahan (Bath Rugby)
Calum Clark (Northampton Saints)
Alex Goode (Saracens)
Lee Mears (Bath Rugby)

Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers)
Tom Croft (Leicester Tigers)
Phil Dowson (Northampton Saints)

  1. My heart used to sink when the ‘Players released’ email arrived in Test week, given that all the players we wanted to see start were heading back to their clubs.

The list of those rejected above isn’t that surprising this time, and I don’t have an issue with any of them.

Interesting to see that Parling is ahead of Attwood in the pecking order…

  2. With who we have available, this is the team I’d field – brackets is who will probably feature:

    1. Corbisiero
    2. Hartley
    3. Cole
    4. Botha
    5. Palmer
    6. Robshaw (likely to be Croft)
    7. Dowson (likely to be Robshaw)
    8. Morgan (likely to be Dowson)
    9. Dickson (likely to be Youngs)
    10. Hodgson
    11. Strettle (possibly Sharples, though he normally plays 14)
    12. Barritt
    13. Farrell
    14. Ashton
    15. Foden

    16. Webber
    17. Marler (possibly Stevens as he does cover both loosehead and tighthead)
    18. Parling
    19. Croft (likely to be Morgan)
    20. Youngs (likely to be Dickson)
    21. JTH
    22. Brown

  3. Agree with Hutch on this one, so used to being disappointed when reading a list of players being released for the weekend. But thankfully this list looks about right. Especially Banahan!!!!!!!

    My starting 22.
    1. Corbisiero
    2. Hartley
    3. Cole
    4. Botha
    5. Palmer
    6. Croft
    7. Robshaw
    8. Morgan
    9. Youngs
    10. Hodgson
    11. Strettle
    12. Barritt
    13. Farrell
    14. Ashton
    15. Foden

    16. Webber
    17. Stevens
    18. Parling
    19. Dowson
    20. Dickson
    21. Joran Turner Hall
    22. Brown

  4. I think that it is revealing that those players that Lancaster got stuck with (under the can’t change any more players due to the Club/Country EPS agreement) ie particularly Mears and Wilson are going home for the proverbial early bath.

I reckon Stevens will be on the bench due to his versatility. Will be gutted for Sharples if he doesn’t make the bench, but Strettle seems to have timed his run for a place well. Interested to know who is more versatile as a replacement – Sharples or Brown. I would have said Sharples but the trouble is Foden can play just about anywhere so Brown will make it to the bench I guess.

  5. I know Foden is best as a full-back, but a back three of Foden, Ashton and Brown does sound great. Any loose kicking from Parks would be returned with interest

Please, please do not start Croft. He would be much better on the bench where he can cover lock and back row. A back three of Robshaw, Dowson and Morgan would be fine by me

Alternatively, I will accept Croft but only on the proviso that Lancaster has sat him down, made him watch some videos of Richard Hill in action and explained to him that a blindside’s job is to make tackles, support runners and hit the rucks, not to hang out on the wing hoping to score tries.

  6. Cant argue with the team Dazza has chosen, Strettle/Sharples too close to call! Sharples would nudge it slightly for me. Agree with the above reasons for Brown inclusion on bench, he deserves a shot!

Be interesting to see how Hodgson goes now there is no JW shadow hanging over him. No doubt he has the skill set, and his mates at 12 & 13 should make life easier. Cant help but imagine him mentally melting being the chocolate tea pot he has proven to be so many times!

Scotland major chance if they get to Hodgson!!

    1. I know what you’re saying with Hodgson, but he has developed a more steely edge in his defensive play since being at Sarries. And Barritt and Farrell will ease pressure on him as they are both ver good tacklers.
