England Scout Notes – 8th September 2009

In a new feature for this season on The Rugby Blog, we will be bringing you a selection of notes that Martin Johnson’s team may or may not have made whilst watching the weekend’s rugby action.

Dylan Hartley

Very impressive in his first game as Northampton skipper, appeared to be everywhere on the field. Solid with his throwing and particularly effective in the loose, starting to play more and more like Steve Thompson. A couple of tough fixtures coming up, so will be interesting to see how he fares.

Danny Cipriani

A few reminders why we picked him for his debut against Ireland, with some lovely passes and sleight of hand. Showed good pace, but tactical nous questionable – against 14 men, he should have been playing the game in Quins territory all afternoon.

Shane Geraghty

Moved to 12 and looked sharp, a couple of line breaks and the odd glimpse of his elusive sidestep. Kicked well, and could be England’s answer at inside centre now that Riki is in France.

James Simpson-Daniel

Great to see JSD fit again, and scored two tries. Looked as dangerous as ever, full of intent with the ball in hand. Also strong in defence. Will keep an eye on him over next few weeks, but need to look at other options because he’ll probably be injured by November.

Ryan Lamb

Looked uncomfortable on his debut for Irish, kicked horrendously and didn’t put in the performance we were hoping for. Can probably be discounted as an international option.

  1. Smart move in making Hartley Saints captain. This will hopefully cement his maturity and leadership on the field, which will greatly enhance his position in the England elite. Some of Johnno’s player preferences baffle me, but it is pretty clear that he favours big, powerful brutes, and this will probably draw him to Hartley over Mears.

  2. Once again a storming display by JSD but as sure as he’ll peak over the next month or two, he’ll get injured just before the Autumn Internationals. Still, let’s enjoy it while it lasts.

  3. I don’t think Cipriani should get anywhere near the Nov Int squads. Let him play 4 uninterrupted (hopefully) months for Wasps and see if he can be consistently top notch. If he can, pick him for the whole six nations and stick with him for the whole of 2010.

  4. Great feature. JSD could’ve, should’ve been a solid fixture in the england team for years and amassed 50 caps. Deja vu, but fingers crossed for an injury-free run.

Ryan Lamb had a poor game on saturday, and showed flashes of his football nature once again, flinging his arms in the air and whingeing constantly to the ref when half the mistakes were his fault. Needs to get his head down and play.

Can we have a ‘French player watch’ for the england internationals based across the channel? As Jonno isn’t going to dispatch his resources to those games, perhaps we can give him a helping hand

  5. Good idea Justin. Maybe you and myself could alternate rugbyblog funded trips to watcht the games and report back?

  6. Shane Geraghty started at 12 for Northampton but it wasnt until he moved to fly-half in the second half that he began to influence the game.

He could still be the answer at 12 now that Flutey is injured – an English Matt Giteau when he played in the centres – but needs to be tested and show the required aggression.
