England’s team for World Cup final

Dan Hipkiss must be feeling pretty hard done by. A good performance in the second half last week has not earned him a starting berth for the World Cup final.

Brian Ashton preferred the experience of Mark Cueto on the wing, with Mathew Tait still at outside centre.

The Rugby Blog broke the news of Hipkiss’ exclusion this morning here. Is this the team to win the World Cup?

England: J Robinson (unattached); P Sackey (Wasps), M Tait (Newcastle), M Catt (London Irish), M Cueto (Sale Sharks); J Wilkinson (Newcastle), A Gomarsall (Harlequins); A Sheridan (Sale Sharks), M Regan (Bristol), P Vickery (Wasps, capt), S Shaw (Wasps), B Kay (Leicester), M Corry (Leicester), L Moody (Leicester), N Easter (Harlequins).

Replacements: G Chuter (Leicester), M Stevens (Bath), L Dallaglio (Wasps), J Worsley (Wasps), P Richards (London Irish), T Flood (Newcastle), D Hipkiss (Leicester).

  1. Right now, it’s a damn fine team (compared with the team we expected to have). Cueto’s got a 7s background, he knows how to close people down and stop them getting past, even if they are faster. He’s also known for being pretty awesome going forward under the high ball, an area where Bryan Habana is comparatively weak. We’ve more chance of Sackey or Cueto pinching a cheeky cross kick and scoring a try than we have of Hipkiss smashing through the centres.
