Flood, Clark, Mears, Waldrom and Doran-Jones all released by England

England have released Lee Mears (Bath), Toby Flood and Thomas Waldrom (Leicester) and Calum Clark and Paul Doran-Jones (Northampton) to play in the LV=Cup semi-finals this weekend with their clubs, ruling them out of playing against France this weekend in Paris.

  1. How many carries, meters made, defenders beaten, etc does Waldrom need to make to get a chance? I know a bench spot for him over Dowson reduces versatility, but we need impact off the bench, plus I don’t think Morgan is an 80 min athlete yet.

They will plan for Mas to play the full 80, if we think Cole will be able to cope with Poux and the Debaty then I would rather have Marler than Stevens on the bench (Corbs providing tighthead cover)

  2. Think that Marler had a good run out last weekend and deserves a place on the bench. His scrumaging is improving all the time and he can be amazing in the loose (see his try in U20’s against Wales) could be a great call when legs are starting to tire!

Feel sorry for Flood he must be scratching his head wandering what on earth has happened. Jonny is finally out of the way and this should be his time but the emergence of Farrel and the disaperance of his form now drop him out of the match day 22.

Be interesting to see what happens at 10 now! I’d be amazed if he brings back Hodgson but you never know!

  3. Hoping Marler gets the nod over Stevens for the bench spot, but can’t see it happening. With Lawes out, I’m guessing Palmer will be back on the bench too? Pity Waldrom has been released, as i think he’d make a great impact sub for the last 20/25mins. Is Wood up for selection? Guessing the team to play at the weekend will be:

    1. Corbisiero
    2. Hartley
    3. Cole
    4. Botha
    5. Parling
    6. Croft
    7. Robshaw
    8. Morgan
    9. Dickson
    10. Farrell
    11. Strettle
    12. Barritt
    13. Tuilagi
    14. Ashton
    15. Foden

    16. Webber
    17. Stevens
    18. Palmer
    19. Dowson
    20. Youngs
    21. Hodgson
    22. Brown

  4. I know Stevens hasn’t been great in the previous matches, but he plyaed excellently against Saints when he came on for Sarries last weekend. His versatility and experience are keeping him in the team. And we (me included) have criticised him for his mistakes, but we are talking about mistakes in an area where the referees could easily sway to either team. Marler is a good player, and one for the future, but his scrummaging is not as good as Corb’s, Cole’s or Stevens’s yet.
