Jersey had a long line of promotions which prepared them for the step up and even they struggled in the first season and were very lucky to avoid the drop in a relegation battle with two other squads.

It’s good to see a few upsets in the first two rounds, it should make the battle for the mid-table and top-of-table places a lot more interesting than Newcastle’s rampage last year.

Rotherham have had it easy in their first two games against two of the relegation competitors, who they face again this weekend. Their game in two weeks against London Welsh will be a real test of how they’re season will look, but the optimism that can come on three big wins may make a difference.

How Ealing respond to that I don’t know. The worst creaming I ever suffered was 52-5 to a side a division above and that was pretty demoralising after the game and at training in the week.
