Happy New Year – there’s plenty to look forward to in 2008

As people up and down the country return to the office over the next few days, we have listed a few things to look forward to this year, diverting your attention from work, beer bellies, detox and the fact that it’s so long until Christmas.

The Heineken Cup returns in a couple of weeks with English clubs flying high.  Gloucester and London Irish are on course for qualification, whilst the others will be battling it out in winner-takes-all fixtures.

Those ties will warm us up nicely for the start of the Six Nations at the beginning of February – it is one of the most eagerly anticipated competitions as each nation looks to rebuild their teams following the World Cup.  There is plenty of exciting talent around, and the rugby will no doubt reflect that.

Here at The Rugby Blog, we’ll be following all the action, with opinion from our regular columnists as well as our readers.  We are also running a Six Nations league where there are some cracking prizes to give away – click on the link for details and to join, if you haven’t already done so.

As we move into the Spring, the Super 14 will be keeping us interested before the end-of-season finales take place for all the domestic competitions, with Cardiff hosting this year’s European Cup final.  The Bournemouth Sevens will mark the end of the regular season with a stunning festival of rugby and music, and The Rugby Blog is proud to be sponsoring the event.

England will then venture Down Under once again, and let’s hope they can take a full strength squad and recreate the magic of 2003.  All of the other Home Nations are currently planning their tours, and we will of course be following their fortunes too.

November will also see the return of the Autumn International series, with all three Southern Hemisphere giants paying a visit to Twickenham, and there could be a fourth fixture against the Pacific Islanders.

There is plenty to be excited about, so throw away your Christmas tree, sell your unwanted presents on Ebay, sign up to the betting league, and get involved at The Rugby Blog.

  1. Ah yes, we’ll also be covering the Tri Nations, where World Champions South Africa will be looking to dominate 7th placed Australia and 8th placed New Zealand!

  2. Good. For the record the 6N will be contested by the sides ranked 4,6,7,8,10 and 11. The 3N will be contested by 1,2 and 5. Shamefully Argentina, ranked ahead of all NH teams, doesn’t get a look in.
