Heineken Cup 2011/12 Predictions: Round 1

Did I really just pick Northampton to beat Munster at Thomond Park this weekend? Yes, it appears that I did.

Not sure what happened whilst I was making my Heineken Cup picks, but I’ve gone with a narrow Saints victory to kick-off the tournament this weekend. It’s not out of the question when you consider their respective teams, as Munster’s pack does not have the same aura that it used to, whilst it’s a strength of Northampton’s. We shall see.

There are some very tricky picks to be made this week, and I hovered over Montpellier v Leinster for longer than I might have expected. The French side have some top players, which made me think twice, but their Top 14 form has been pretty ordinary so far this season.

Scarlets v Castres could go either way, and it’s the same for Ospreys v Biarritz, but I’m backing the Welsh sides to win at home, which is so important in this competition.

Ulster over Clermont and Glasgow over Bath could also be slightly controversial, and home advantage was certainly a factor in those predictions.

Looking down the list, there is much to argue with here – let me know your thoughts on my SportGuru predictions:

Harlequins v Connacht Rugby: Harlequins by 13
Racing Metro 92 v Cardiff Blues: Cardiff Blues by 8
London Irish v Edinburgh: London Irish by 6
Aironi Rugby v Leicester Tigers: Leicester Tigers by 13
Montpellier v Leinster: Leinster by 8
Scarlets v Castres Olympique: Scarlets by 5
Ospreys v Biarritz: Ospreys by 5
Ulster v ASM Clermont Auvergne: Ulster by 5
Munster v Northampton Saints: Northampton Saints by 5
Glasgow Warriors v Bath: Glasgow Warriors by 5
Saracens v Benetton Treviso: Saracens by 18
Toulouse v Gloucester Rugby: Toulouse by 8

  2. Oh so close with that Munster v Saints prediction…did ok with the others though and sitting at 152nd on SportGuru, despite the fact that nearly everyone else picked Munster to win.

A full week of research and hopefully I can keep it up in Round 2…
