Heineken Cup groups announced

With all the news and interest surrounding the Lions and, to a lesser extent, the international teams, it would have been pretty easy to have missed the fact that the draw for next season’s Heineken Cup was announced this week.

In a draw which the majority of players and coaches will only turn their attention to after the demands of a summer tour (or a summer on the beach for those not involved), champions Leinster have been drawn against London Irish, Scarlets and Brive in Pool 6. Elsewhere, in Pool 5 Toulouse, Cardiff Blues, Sale and Harlequins will fight it out in what looks to be the ‘group of death’.

Here is the draw in full:

Pool 1 – Munster (Ire), Perpignan (Fra), Northampton (Eng), Treviso (Ita)

Pool 2 – Biarritz (Fra), Gloucester (Eng), Newport Gwent Dragons (Wal), Glasgow (Sco)

Pool 3 – Leicester (Eng), Ospreys (Wal), Clermont Auvergne (Fra), Viadana (Ita)

Pool 4 – Bath (Eng), Stade Francais (Fra), Ulster (Ire), Edinburgh (Sco)

Pool 5 – Toulouse (Fra), Cardiff Blues (Wal), Sale (Eng), Harlequins (Eng)

Pool 6 – Leinster (Ire), London Irish (Eng), Scarlets (Wal), Brive (Fra)

What do you make of the draw? Who will be breezing through and who will be the early casualties?

  1. Unconnected but interesting, if we consider that only Brazil has been able to claim victory at the Football World Cup outside of its own continent – what can we expect for the World Cup in South Africa?
