Heineken Cup Round 6: what each team needs to do

It’s the last round of the Pool stage in this season’s Heineken Cup, and with two teams already through, there are 12 teams vying for the remaining 6 quarter-final places. Here is a team-by-team guide to what they need to do to qualify.

Pool 1

Munster: a win or a draw against Northampton would see them through, whilst a Bonus Point defeat would leave them watching the other results, hoping they go their way.

Northampton: the Saints must win at Thomond Park to guarantee qualification, but could still qualify if they lose as one of the two best runners-up.

Perpignan and Treviso are out.

Pool 2

Not much excitement here – Biarritz have already qualified as Pool winners.

Gloucester, Glasgow and the Dragons are out.

Pool 3

Leicester: a bonus-point win over the Ospreys would guarantee qualification as pool winners. If they only get 4 points, they’ll still go through as one of the best runners-up, or even pool winners if Clermont Auvergne fail to pick up a bonus point at Viadana.

Ospreys: likewise, a bonus-point victory would guarantee the pool winner spot, whereas a 4-point win should see them go through as runners-up.

Clermont Auvergne: all they can do is get a bonus point victory in Viadana and then wait to see the Leicester v Ospreys result. They should go through as one of the best runners-up, assuming they beat Viadana.

Viadana are out.

Pool 4

Stade Francais: a win over Edinburgh would guarantee the top spot of this pool. If they lose, they’ll need to rely on Bath to beat Ulster, but if Ulster win and Stade lose, it’s unlikely they’ll go through.

Ulster: they need a four-try win over Bath and for Stade to lose in Edinburgh. If Stade win, they’ll be relying on the results of the games involving Northampton, London Irish, Sale, Cardiff and the Scarlets to all go their way.

Edinburgh and Bath are out.

Pool 5

Toulouse have already qualified as pool winners

Cardiff Blues: must secure a bonus-point victory over Harlequins, and then rely on Northampton to be beaten well by Munster, London Irish to lose to Leinster and for Sale, Ulster and the Scarlets all to miss out on a bonus point win.

Sale Sharks: the Sharks also need a bonus-point win in their match against Toulouse, and then for the Northampton, Irish, Cardiff, Ulster and Scarlets results to go their way.

Harlequins are out.

Pool 6

Leinster: a win or a bonus-point defeat would be sufficient to guarantee their place in the next round.

London Irish: they need a bonus-point victory themselves, and to prevent a losing bonus point for Leinster. If Northampton get nothing from Thomond Park, a 4-point win will see them through.

Scarlets: competing with Sale, Ulster and Cardiff for a runners-up spot, so need all those teams to fail to pick up a bonus-point win, and for Northampton to lose heavily, and for London Irish to lose.

Brive are out.

What a weekend we have in store!

  1. Thanks for clarifying this! I was trying to work it all out last night when I was writing my predictions, but it was too much for my poor little brain to take so late at night.

I can’t wait for the Munster v Saints game tonight and the Exiles vs Leinster. Should be a cracking weekend full of twists and turns.
