Henson included in Wales Six Nations squad

Warren Gatland has included Gavin Henson in his squad, plus five uncapped players in Harry Robinson, Ashley Beck, Liam Williams, Rhodri Jones and Lou Reed. The 35-man Wales squad, captained by Sam Warburton, which will travel to Gdansk, Poland, next week for the 2012 RBS 6 Nations training camp.

The Wales head coach has stuck with the majority of his much hailed Rugby World Cup side, adding just four players who did not feature in either his extended 45-man pre-RWC training squad or the December international against Australia at the Millennium Stadium at the start of this season. Three players – Mitchell, Gill and Sale Sharks back row Andy Powell – join the squad from English clubs and Wales have also called upon the services of France based trio James Hook, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne, with all six available to Wales for a reduced amount of time on the camp (three days), the maximum stipulated by IRB regulations.

  1. Never thought I’d say this, but I’m glad to see Henson back in the fold. He was one of the best players for Wales in the warm-up game against England, and it was a shame he picked up an injury to force him out of RWC.

The Welsh backline is pretty decent already, but he’s another handy option at 10, 12 or 15 (don’t play him at 13 though, he thinks it’s boring).

  2. my Wales XV for game v Ireland. Matthew Rees back in the side, Huw Bennet banished forever, Ryan Jones to fill in for Alun Wyn Jones in the second row and Alex Cuthbert to make the left wing slot his own for seasons to come. Henson to drop out after the training camp. I’d have five forwards on the bench as going to be a physical battle with some hurt Irish pride on 5th Feb!

    G Jenkins
    M Rees
    A Jones
    B Davies
    R Jones
    D Lydiate
    S Warburton
    T Faletau

    M Phillips
    R Priestland
    J Roberts
    J Davies
    G North
    A Cuthbert
    L Halfpenny

    subs C Mitchell, K Owens, P James, I Evans, A Powell, L Williams, J Hook

      1. I like Williams he has a fast pass and certainly speeds the phases up. But playing away against a hefty Ireland team – who might go for another big man Conor Murray – Mike Phillips is going to be a thoroughly required physical presence. Williams on for last 20 mins if Wales are chasing the game!

        1. Physical presence? Scrum-half? Morgan Para? Will Genia?

Phillips is the most retarded welsh number 9 I`ve ever seen. Even the italians had better scrummies than him last year`s 6N. So sad such a great team must bear his idiotic style of play.

  3. “Ireland announce six nations squad.”
    “Lancaster announces England EPS.”
    “Italy six nation squad announced.”
    “France name 30 man squad.”
    “Scotland name six nations squad.”
“Henson named in Wales six nation squad.”

Why is it that Henson being in the squad is such an important announcement it needs to go in the title? He’s back, he’s playing fairly well, of course he’s in the squad. Ashton is a complete cock as well doesn’t mean everyone is amazed when he gets picked.

    1. Firstly, good research.

Secondly, over the years we’ve tended to slate him and poke fun at him. Only fair we give him some positive coverage.

    2. Agreed with this post all the way till the “Ashton is a complete cock” part. He may have had a couple of drunken episodes but hes nothing on Henson.

      1. fair enough the Ashton jibe was me having a go at a guy I don’t personally like (for one main reason “my world cup year”) I can’t help the feeling he started writing that assuming England would do really well and then they didnt. And he does insist on being obnoxiously smug in interviews. Course he’d be nothing without Ben Foden. All Henson actually did was take a year off to fix a crappy marriage, which didn’t work, and make a big pile of money with no real work (reality TV). Wouldnt we all like to do that.

But this post is not really about Ashton, or Henson come to that, I think that this Wales squad is strong. It’s good to see a good fight for Shane Williams spot. Odd to see no Aled Brew. Is he injured? I think using the France based players is sensible. There is no match for Mike Phillips although I could live without Lee Byrne. Should be a good pack too. That back row of Warburton, Lydiate and Faletau is just awesome. Could be a grand slam winning team.

  4. NO MORE HENSON PLEASE !
I AM WELSH A CARDIFF BLUES FAN AND THINK THAT HENSON HAS BEHAVED REALLY BADLY WITH REGARD HIS COME BACK SEASON … SIGNS FOR SARACENS ,WHO WERE TAKING A CHANCE ON PAST PERFORMANCES AND DID HIM A FAVOUR THEN STUCK TWO FINGERS UP TO THEM AND SIGNS FOR TOULON … MORE MONEY… THEN JUMPS SHIP AGAIN …CARDIFF BLUES !
HOW HAS THIS HELPED HIM BE NEAR HIS KIDS AND SORT OUT HIS MARRIAGE ?
HE HAD ONE GREAT SEASON WITH WALES … THREW HIS TOYS OUT OF THE PRAM WHEN HE DID NOT GET IN THE LIONS TEAM AND HAS DONE NOTHING SINCE !
SHOULD BE PROUD TO WEAR THE JERSEY AND HE GIVES THE IMPRESSION HE CAN TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT … LOOK WHAT WE DID WITHOUT HIM IN THE WORLD CUP !
A JOURNEY MAN THAT HAS NO PRIDE OR PRINCIPLES ! I CAN NOT BELIEVE HE IS IN THE WELSH SQUAD …. MAYBE HE WILL HAVE AN INJURY AND END UP ON BIG BROTHER WITH GARETH THOMAS ! RANT OVER !!!!!!!!

    1. The Saracens chucked him out as did Toulon and so he moved to a new team. Surely you’d get a new job if you got fired from your last one. Actually, I can’t be bothered with this any more, no one is ever changing they’re mind about him are they. I hope he plays a blinding six nations and shuts all his critics up. I am done talking about Gavin Henson.

  5. It doesn’t matter if you love him or hate him, given his history with the press Gavin Henson will always make headlines. I’m pretty sure he’d rather they were on the back page than the front, but that’s another story.

Back to the issue at hand, that looks like a pretty tidy squad. The front row is strong as ever and the back row proved during the world cup that they can compete with the best. Warburton is (begrudgingly) one of my favourite players at the moment and he brings the kind of energy and passion I wish England had. With him alongside Lydiate and Faletau providing pretty clean ball it should help the likes of Jamie Roberts to cross the gain line and create the gaps for the fast men to break through.

Put simply, if Wales aren’t in the running for the title on the last weekend then it could well be considered a failure.

    1. Agreed, although I think some of the new English choices may well bring the passion and energy that Warburton has in spades

This Welsh team looks good with the only concerns being a lack of depth in the front and second rows. In that resepct is good ti see Rhys Gill getting a chance – I’ve seen him oplay some good games for Sarries

Re Faletau – I like him as a player and he has bags of potential but in my eyes (and I’ve only seen him play internationally), he does tend to drift in and out of games a bit

  6. Heson is not yet in the six nations squad as this is simply the training group off to the Polish freezer and six or seven will drop out.

Logic would say that he may be better off being sent back to the Blues for more game time after this but Gatland does seem to favour him . Put it this way one good performance and I would be convinced but I also remember Henson’s six nations game in 06 in Dublin when he came on for Stephen Jones and had an absolute nightmare so please don’t pick him as outside half cover .

Stephen Jones should be further mentioned basically for not being in the squad , now he has been a faithful servant to the Welsh and British LIons game with the right attitude not seeking publicity for the sake of it , no headlines for his exclusion though it seems to signal the end of his international career unlike the orange one.

    1. Yeh I’m an English fan and Jones is a real legend should get some big respect if this is the end of his career… wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a comeback at some point tho.

  7. Big question is can Wales build on the potential they showed at the RWC. To be honest they have not actually had that great results (Ireland aside) just performances.

Will they miss AWJ and Charteris in the boiler room? They seemed to really get Wales moving at the RWC.
