Howley confirms unchanged Wales line-up for Italy

Ryan Jones continues as captain as Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones are named on the bench. Kick off is at 14.30 GMT on Saturday.

“We announced last week that we would reward the starting XV that beat France by keeping faith with the same line-up for this weekend’s game,” said Howley.

“The side is fit and raring to go and on the bench we have brought in Sam (Warburton) and Alun Wyn (Jones), who have both returned from injury which is a boost to the squad.

“In France the players showed real determination and resilience and we will need that again in Rome.

“Italy have already showed so far in this campaign what they are capable of, so we know the challenge we will be facing on Saturday.”

Wales team to play Italy:
15 Leigh Halfpenny
14 Alex Cuthbert
13 Jonathan Davies
12 Jamie Roberts
11 George North
10 Dan Biggar
9 Mike Phillips

8 Toby Faletau
7 Justin Tipuric
6 Ryan Jones (c)
5 Ian Evans
4 Andrew Coombs
3 Adam Jones
2 Richard Hibbard
1 Gethin Jenkins.

Replacements: 16 Ken Owens, 17 Paul James, 18 Craig Mitchell, 19 Alun Wyn Jones, 20 Sam Warburton, 21 Lloyd Williams, 22 James Hook, 23 Scott Williams.

What do you make of the team? Was it the right decision to name an unchanged line-up?

  1. with the number of injuries that they are dealing with in certain positions, plus the fact that they managed to get themselves a win last week, this has to be the right call.

i appreciate the fact that he did not just bring Alun Wyn or Warburton straight back into the XV. I was cynical over Warburton’s injury, i think it was very conveniently timed. so glad that the backrow has stayed. AW Jones is going to be lacking fitness, plus evans and coombs have done very well, and dont deserve to simply be ousted by a returning player.

overall good call with what is available.

  2. Sorry, just one small comment – kick off is at 14.30 GMT, not 15.30 GMT. Wouldn’t want anyone to get confused and miss the game!
