Ireland injury worries worsen

irelandIreland’s injury concerns have deepened as back-row Chris Henry has been ruled out for around four weeks. Following an MRI scan Monday, it was confirmed to the Ireland medical team that Henry suffered a cartilage tear to his right knee while playing last Friday. The injury will require surgery and will rule him out of playing for approximately four weeks.

Munster back row Tommy O’Donnell has been called into the squad as cover for this week after making an appearance for the O2 Ireland Wolfhounds at the end of January.

Connacht centre Dave McSharry is also unavailable this week as he is still suffering from a niggling groin injury and so Ian Madigan has been called into the Irish camp.

  1. big shame for henry, i felt he had been doing so well recently that he should probably have been starting at 7, with SOB at 6.

similarly a shame for McSharry, as the injury to D’Arcy meant he would have had one of his best chances to have a run at 12. nice to see madigan in though.

i would like to see the ireland backline have maybe McFadden at 12, as i think he may be the option here once the days of D’Arcy are done. I also think that cave could have a go here, although i get the feeling he is more of a 13, and therefore the successor to BOD.

Earls should most definitely not be playing 12, that is for sure. hasnt Fitzgerald played 12 a number of times (if not for ireland then definitely leinster) cos that may work nicely with BOD.

based on that 30 my ireland team for the game against Scotland would be:

    1. Kilcoyne
    2. Best
    3. Ross
    4. O’Callaghan
    5. Ryan
    6. O’Mahony
    7. O’Brien
    8. Heaslip
    9. Murray
    10. O’Gara (i would prefer Jackson, but i think ROG’s experience is a must)
    11. Gilroy
    12. McFadden
    13. O’Driscoll
    14. Fitzgerald (i am sure it will likely be Earls – unless he is played in the centre)
    15. Kearney

    16. Cronin
    17. Court
    18. Fitzpatrick
    19. Toner/Stevenson
    20. Henderson/O’Donnell
    21. Reddan
    22. Jackson (i would have Madigan here and Jackson start if ROG wasnt playing)
    23. Earls/Fitzgerald.

the unavailable irish list is mounting, which is not good!

Healey, Strauss, O’Connell, McCarthey, Ferris, Henry, Wilson, Sexton, Zebo, D’Arcy, Bowe.

  2. yep Scotland could actually win this :(
i dont agree woth playing o’gara if his head is not there. he looked like he had been called out of retirement against england. play the form players regardless as long as theyre internationally capped. o’gara will be playing im sure. hope he’s ready!!
