Ireland name side for RWC Warm-Up clash against England

Declan Kidney has named the Ireland team for their fourth and final RWC Warm-Up match against England in Dublin this weekend. Geordan Murphy returns to the fold after a long absence through injury, while Brian O’Driscoll is rested as a precaution following a knock. Stephen Ferris is in the number 6 jersey after Sean O’Brien was another casualty over the last week. Paul O’Connell captains the side.

Ireland:

15. Murphy, 14. Bowe, 13. Earls, 12. D’Arcy, 11. Trimble, 10. O’Gara, 9. Reddan, 1. Healy, 2. Flannery, 3. Ross, 4. O’Callaghan, 5. O’Connell (c), 6. Ferris, 7. Wallace, 8. Heaslip.

  1. This is going to be a great game. That’s a strong team as well, although without BOD, Ireland’s midfield is the weakness just like England.

Great to see Ferris back in a starting jersey, I’m a big fan.

  2. Ireland are pretty lucky that they have Ferris to step straight in for SOB. Both teams opting for the more conservative 10 but more exciting 13, Earls vs Tuilagi could provide fireworks, Tins vs Darcy will not.

  3. I wouldnt fancy being Earls…in my opinion Tuilagi is the real deal, just what England need.
Without BOD Ireland look exposed in the centre, and if Darcy gets injured we,re in serious trouble.
Should be a belter of a game and what are the chances that someone will miss the WC cos of an injury they will pick up !

  4. I think it would have been interesting to leave Earls on the wing and bring Trimble or Bowe into number 12. Darcy is in my mind a 13 like BOD and not a 12. For the world cup match it would be interesting to see BOD at 13 and Trimble or Bowe at 12 (or even BOD at 12 with one the aforementioned big lads at 13) but it’s getting a bit late for experimentation at this stage.

    1. Ireland need to do something different at 12, everyone was saying it all through the six nations. Darcy used to be great but hasn’t performed to his old standards at international level for a couple of years now. I can’t believe Kidney always overlooks James Downey, very consistent performer (if not too flashy) and just the go-to man BOD would work well off. Bowe could make a great center, he formed half the partnership that beat South Africa on the lions tour (perhaps its too late for this RWC). But its clear Kidney is keeping faith in the out of form Darcy for now anyway…
