Ireland squad for Argentina tour announced

IRFUJoe Schmidt has named four uncapped players in his Ireland squad to tour Argentina this summer. Ulster’s Robbie Diack and Rob Herring, Munster’s James Cronin and Connacht’s Kieran Marmion are all in line to win their first caps.

There is no place in the squad for Leinster fly-half Ian Madigan, with Schmidt naming just two recognised outside halves – Johnny Sexton and Paddy Jackson. Madigan will likely tour with Emerging Ireland in Romania.

There is no room for Tommy Bowe, either, who is left at home after an injury-plagued season, leaving Simon Zebo, Rob Kearney, Andrew Trimble, Keith Earls, Fergus McFadden and Felix Jones as the back three options.

Cian Healy, Gordon D’Arcy and Sean O’Brien have been given the summer off, while Brian O’Driscoll’s retirement means a new look centre partnership will take to the field for the first test on June 7th.

Paul O’Connell will captain the side in Argentina.

Ireland play Argentina in Resistencia on June 7 and Tucuman on June 15.

  1. Ah, the pain of seeing a Ruddock name on that teamsheet….

Has D’Arcy really been given the summer off or is this a genuine attempt at getting a new partnership going?

  2. Hang about … no Copeland? I guess they want him to prove himself with Munster first? He makes pro12 dream team but doesn’t make Ireland squad. Harsh.

  3. What’s happened to Luke Fitzgerald? A star performer I thought, esp for the Lions, unless he’s injured again, of fallen from favour… but @ 27?

  4. As if I actually spent ages looking for O’Driscolll in the squad and then I realised… :(

  5. Looking forward to seeing a daren cave hensaw partnership but cave at 12 i dont see him as a 13 going forward but if he can adapt he might do better at 12. Marshel and henshaw woukd be nice to have alook at to but marshels concusions seem to becoming a problem. Also agree only one option at 8 (bar geordie murphy) is jamie heslip going to play all 80mins of these 3 test matchs surly we need to have alook at other options he cant keep playing games forever soon or later he is going to burn out or get injured. Robin copeland please instead of diack
