Ireland Squad for the 2011 RBS Six Nations

Declan Kidney has named his squad for this year’s Six Nations this morning and there are a couple of notable absentees and additions.

Tomas O’Leary and Tony Buckley are both named in the O2 Irish Wolfhounds Squad and have missed out on selection, while the uncapped Connacht forward Mike McCarthy is included in the main squad. Luke Fitzgerald and Rory Best also make a return to the squad after injury.

  1. One position that stands out is full-back. A big loss of both Murphy and Kearney. Who’s the front runner to slot in?

  2. so disappointed with this squad!!! not picked on form the likes of hayes in the squad!! ruddock and no ryan no mc fadden or o’mally we want a youth full team look at the ages POC and o’gara got there chances why don’t we think these guys can’t do a job Kidney is to conservative @ justin between Fitz and Murphy for 15 thats johnny Murphy

  3. so glad mike ross is there, any hopefully will get some games this time cause he is the best tight head Ireland have at present. I don’t know the story with Jerry Flanery, he is a class act but if he is injured he should be allowed recover fully. I hope decie puts a bit more faith in sean cronin this time, which he did not have over the november series. I think Mick O’Driscoll is a good servant to munster but not good enough for international rugby. Hopefully it will be leo and paul (good match against italy to help paul get match fitness). Back row is very tight but you have to go for sean obrien, ferris and heaslip. I’m glad jennings is there as he is the best out and out 7 that ireland have at the moment. Rhys Ruddock is a good player and will be a class act but i think d. ryan has been playing very well for leinster and should of got a chance. Backs is ok, outhalfs pick themselves but would not have seen decie dropping oleary coming and picking stringer but its a good choice in my eyes. Still think reddan is under performing at international level, but is always solid for leinster. I would have liked to see mcfadden in instead of wallace, and he can place kick too. Great to see horgan getting a chance after his recent good form.

  4. This extended squad is hardly progress, even allowing for injured players being absent. This upcoming series is one that we can win, but no instead we have among this squad a number of worn out and in some cases journeyman Munster players.
Yet again we have a blinkered ex-Munster coach clearly unable to see through his rose ( read red) coloured specs at the evidence unfolding before him on the pitch.

I include in the squad Fitzgerald (bit short on full-backs as he is not ideal), Best, Paul O’Connell, and Tomas O Leary on known form in the past.
Bit of a toss-up at scrum half between the 4 Leinster and Munster guys. Bit dubious about the centres they’re getting a bit long in the tooth, class fellas but getting fragile. Better keep Eoin O’ Malley handy (him and McFadden are the near future). Gerry Flannery is also a top guy, don’t know about the injury situation though. Also keep close to hand Paddy Wallace, Fionn Carr, Keith Earles, Gavin Duffey, Ryan Caldwell, Shane Jennings and Rhys Ruddock. And of course our indisposed pair at full back

What a waste the Autumn series were in terms of team development. The pack was a disgrace, a clapped out Munster ‘B’ side. Wake up Declan, take off your slippers and put your boots on. Or leave.

My match-day 22 (as available at this time)

    15- Luke Fitzgerald, 14-Tommy Bowe, 13-BoD , 12- G. D’Arcy,, 11-Andrew Trimble, 10-Jonathan Sexton, 9-Peter Stringer; 8-Jamie Heaslip, 7-Sean O’Brien, 6-Stephen Ferris, 5-Paul O’Connell, 4- Leo Cullen (captain) , 3-Mike Ross, 2-Sean Cronin, 1-Cian Healy.
    Replacements: 16- Rory Best, 17-Tom Court, 18- Devon Toner , 19-Dominic Ryan , 20-.Tomas O Leary , 21-Ian Humphries, 22-Fergus McFadden
