It’s team announcement day again

Over the last 6 weeks or so, days like today have been met with anticipation and excitement as 12pm approaches, and although the Championship is gone, today is no different.

Unfortunately, that excitement usually gets crushed as the team news comes through and it’s the same old rubbish, with no ambition or daring to be different. But perhaps the fact that we can no longer win – and that we are huge underdogs going to Paris – will encourage Johnno to shake things up a little.

It’s a similar situation to last week when I was convinced that Delon Armitage would be ruled out, and that Ben Foden would start. This week, Ugo Monye has been recovering from injury and the way he was stretchered off on Saturday suggested he wouldn’t be fit for this weekend.

Chris Ashton will be on tenterhooks awaiting the news, and I think every reader of The Rugby Blog would love to see him selected. However, the fact that he has not been a part of the matchday squad indicates that Johnno might steer clear of giving him a starting berth, bringing him onto the bench only if neceessary. I hope I’m wrong.

I’d love to see Ben Foden, Ben Youngs, Courtney Lawes and Ashton all given places in the first team with instructions to go out and play. I’ve got a feeling though that the side will be pretty much unchanged from that which was so awful to watch on Saturday. But, they didn’t lose the game, so Johnno might think that changes are not required and it’s just a matter of time before it all clicks.

  1. I have to agree, I have a sneaking feeling it will be same old same old and that appears to be where Mr. Johnson is happiest. I felt England’s best play on Saturday came when our replacements were on the field, commitment from Moody, vision from Flood and raw talent from Foden. I’m looking forward to the 12 o’clock reveal but not with too much expectation.

  2. Reveal is tomorrow apparently boys!! As Bastereaud has been named in the France team expect to see Worsley named over Moody or Armitage… brilliant negative rugby from the English, I will not even be watching as it doesn’t kick off until midnight (I am in Abu Dhabi at the moment)

  3. Hmmm, looks like it is tomorrow! Sorry to get hopes up. Media schedule said team announcement would be today, but when has Johnno ever done what we want him to do?

Worsley will be retained I’m sure, and I’ve got a sinking feeling that there won’t be any other changes. It looks like Monye will be fit again, and I think Johnno will stick stubbornly to his guns, as per usual.

  4. Borthwick may be a doubt! Please if there’s any justice in the world let him be ruled out for Sat!

Read that Monye is going to try and “play through the pain” surely it would be more sensible to let the Premierships top try scorer have a go? Oh yeah just remembered we’re talking about England so the opposite will happen!

If Jonno picks Armitage ahead of Foden for the last game he will have lost my respect forever.
