Jamie Roberts out for six months due to ACL injury

After having injured the same knee four times this season, Jamie Roberts has been ruled out for six months following the news that he requires an operation on a longstanding medial ligament injury. With next year’s Lions tour in mind and advice from doctors that his knee is “no longer stable”, Roberts will miss not only Cardiff’s quarter final against Leinster this weekend and also Wales summer tour of Australia.

With Roberts out the picture, Wales coach Warren Gatland will turn to both Scott Williams and Ashley Beck to fill the gap in midfield. How big a loss is this for Wales?

  1. Pretty big loss but they can cope. Scott Williams in at 13 and Jonathon Davies to shift in one space to 12, that’s where he started his pro career and i think its his more comfortable position. Does he still play there mostly for Scarlets? That pairing might even be more balanced. This makes the Henson debacle a bit more of a problem for depth concerns.

    1. Henson hasn’t been sacked by Wales….. but I know what you mean.

Just hope this latest incident wasn’t caused by slipping on melted ice on the floor of a plane…… ;-)

  2. Personally I thought that Wales looked more balanced with Williams and Davies. You have enough big backs that you won’t notice Roberts gone like you would have done before Cuthbert and North. And as for Henson – you’re so much better without him, don’t pine for a moron who has caused trouble everywhere he’s gone. Develop some younger players who actually want to make the most of their talent.

  3. I think Roberts was in need of a rest and this may come as a blessing in disguise to give Scott Williams three games in Australia and see what happens. Scarlets have swapped Williams and Davies around this season but for me defensively it would be Williams 12, Davies 13

    1. I agree with you, also Williams needs his opportunity – think he will be more then capable – even a better choice against Australia – that’s no disrespect to Roberts
