Jason Robinson picks his Lions XV

Ahead of the squad announcement on 30th April, Lions legend Jason Robinson has selected his starting XV for the upcoming British & Irish Lions Test series against the Wallabies. The former dual-code international was impressed by what he saw in England’s win over New Zealand in the Autumn Internationals and from all the home nations in the recent 6 Nations championship, subsequently naming a side that features eight players from the reigning 6 Nations champions, Wales.

In the backs, where Jason himself played five tests for the Lions, memorably scoring in the opening Test in 2001 on the Lions last Tour to Australia, he has named Welsh full-back Leigh Halfpenny on the wing and has given Ireland’s most capped player Brian O’Driscoll the nod as captain.

Watch his full selection below:

    1. Can you not watch it because it’s not working, or because you’re at work?!

      Haha, here it is:

      15 Rob Kearney (Ireland)
      14 Leigh Halfpenny (Wales)
      13 Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland) ©
      12 Manu Tuilagi (England)
      11 George North (Wales)
      10 Jonathan Sexton (Ireland)
      9 Mike Phillips (Wales)

      1 Cian Healy (Ireland)
      2 Rory Best (Ireland)
      3 Adam Jones (Wales)
      4 Joe Launchbury (England)
      5 Alun-Wyn Jones (Wales)
      6 Sam Warburton (Wales)
      7 Justin Tipuric (Wales)
      8 Toby Faletau (Wales)

      1. Kearney has not been very good at all this season, only in based on past performances. Halfpenny should be 15 with an in form winger in (Cuthbert, Zebo, Bowe)

BOD also not really done that much, despite all his past heroics and the wales game in 6N, although maybe he’s better than the other options.

Sexton – a lot is made of him, and I think at club level it is justified, but I can only remember one or two really excellent games for Ireland, no consistency in performance AND HE’S BEEN INJURED FOR AGES.

I think Genia will destroy Phillips.

Best is completely off form and his throwing is dreadful, so Hibbard should be in.

Warburton has also not done enough to have the 6 shirt despite one good performance against Eng when his whole team were dominant on the day.

    2. and yet more proof charlie that you dont work.

thanks for putting up the xv… i cant see it either

robinson’s team is bang on in my opinion, with the exception of halfpenny at wing. very unimaginative.

      1. Best & Kearney’s form has dipped though, no? I don’t think I’d have either of them on my starting 15.

I’d have Cuthbert over North but otherwise it’s a decent selection. Missing a Scot though, so I’d have Hogg in there too.

  1. Would play HP at 15 and Bowe on the wing, and would not play that back row. I feel there should be 1 ball carrier, one fetcher and 1 silent assassin. My ball carrier would be Faletau/O’Brien, my fetcher would be Tipuric/Warburton and my silent assassin Wood/Robshaw.

    1. agree totally with your backrow’s. and about the balance. i refer to the “silent assassin” job as being a “workhorse” but i think we both agree on it being the unseen and often “boring” ruck work etc.

wood and robshaw fill the workhorse role perfectly imo. both can also do a job at 7 or possibly even 8, but only if the other players fill the balance.

warburton and tipuric are without doubt the fetchers in the B&I isles. the only player who could come close would be Rennie, but he is injured. Ball carriers are faletau and SOB without doubt. SOB can do a job in all 3 positions, again, as long as the balance is right. another option could be Morgan, if he can prove his form after injury.

i think that Lydiate could come in for either Wood or Robshaw, although if the press is to be believed then Croft is in over them both already.

guys like kelly brown would be excellent in the midweek team, but i dont think that a possible test player should be sacrificed for someone who is a good midweeker. in my mind we should be taking a squad of 35-39 possible test contenders. although i do understand the need for “characters” to help the tour party gel.

  2. Obviously most should be Welsh and Halfpenny deserves to be full back with Hogg as the midweeker.and Lee Byrne as the spare
    Drikco,OBrien and only just Healy
    Hines and Hamilton with Parling/Launchbury.
And Kennedy if theres anymore room .
    Philliphs/Young brothers & Care
Either Welsh o/h with Farrell (Sexton as 4th choice)
    Strettle as a utility
So 3 Irish, 3/4 Scots,5/6 Eng All other Welsh
Warburton as capt with his countrymen for b/row Test Team.
Depending on injuries last men in squad (OConnell and TC & Haskell making up the numbers.

    1. Strettle as utility? Can he play anywhere other than wing?

Also Haskell won’t go, to many good back row players. Also no AWJ at lock? And who do you mean my either Welsh Outside half? Hook and Biggar? I would very surprised if either of them went.

    2. I am willing to put money on: Hines, Hamilton, Strettle and Byrne not going. If you believe Sexton is the 4th best FH we have to offer then you obviously don’t watch much rugby. Also if you think ‘most’ should be Welsh you are very naive. 14 of the Welsh starting XV should go and no more. Remember the Welsh haven’t beaten a SH giant since 2008 (one out of their last 26 attempts) and are also a team that lost to Samoa at home.

        1. have to agree with both of your comments here Dave. 20odd Welsh man… we might as well just have a welsh tour.

i am sure i have an english bias, and would maybe take too many, but either way i can admit that taking a squad of 37ish with more than 15 from one nation defeats the point of a lions tour.

          LH- Healy, Jenkins, Grant/Vunipola
          HK- Hibbard, Best, T. Youngs
          TH- Jones, Cole, Murray/Ross
LK- O’Connell, Launchbury, Wyn Jones, Ryan, Gray
          BS- Wood, Robshaw, Lydiate
          OS- Warburton, Tipuric
N8- Faletau, O’Brien (morgan could go as 8, SOB as flank)
          SH- Phillips, B. Youngs, Laidlaw/Murray
          FH- Sexton, Farrell
IC- Roberts, Twelvetrees (ability to cover 10 gets nod)
          OC- Tuilagi, O’Driscoll, Davies
          WG- North, Bowe, Zebo, Cuthbert
          FB- Halfpenny, Hogg, Kerarney

Players with a “/” means i havent decided yet… so once those decisions are made this squad will have 38 names. by all accounts they will take 37. so chances are i will lose a centre, and my money would be on 12Ts not travelling.

players i would have on standby (ignoring the obvious “/”‘s as they would top this list)

          LH – Sheridan, James
          HK – Hartley, Strauss, Ford
          TH – Cross
          LK – Parling, Hamilton, Hines
          FL – Croft, Brown
          N8 – Heaslip, Beattie
          SH – Care
          FH – Wilkinson, Biggar/Preistland
          C – Marshall, Scott, Barritt
          WG – Maitland, Wade
          FB – Brown, Hook, Foden

  3. No actually meant Rhys Priestlan and Biggar.
And Strettle can also be used as a 2nd centre for the midweek side there will of course be injuries before the ideal pick gets to Oz…the entire Welsh loose back row if fit and available might cope best with a very quick and skillful Oz backline..!!
