Lions squad announcement: the excitement builds

I could barely sleep last night with excitement about the announcement of the British and Irish Lions squad, which takes place today at 1.30pm.

We’ll report the full squad here as soon as it’s announced, and although it will end months of speculation, a new debate will surely begin.

Paul O’Connell looks set to be named as tour captain, which isn’t a huge surprise, but there are bound to be some raised eyebrows at who is and isn’t selected today.

Amongst the high-profile names that could miss out are Jonny Wilkinson (obviously), Danny Cipriani, Ryan Jones, Steve Borthwick and James Haskell – although two of these players play for Wasps, and may well travel.

There have also been a few suggestions for the ‘left-field’ choices such as Tom May, who has been in outstanding form at Newcastle.

Who else do you think might be an unexpected choice? Will Cipriani don the Lions jersey?

  1. I can’t see any place for Cipriani in the party which is a shame. As Stuart Barnes suggests in his article in The Times, it would be good to take at least one flair player to apply a touch of magic when required, but with Cipriani, Hook and Wilkinson all likely to miss out then it doesn’t look like this will materialise.

Would love to see a place in the squad for Josh Lewsey to cap off a brilliant career, but there should be no place for sentiment in this squad selection and I think he’ll miss out unfortunately.

    Roll on 1.30pm!

  3. Not a bad squad, interesting that you haven’t picked Haskell.

I’d take Harry Ellis over Danny Care, and probably Tomas O’Leary over both of them. I’ve got a feeling Cipriani will go, and that he’ll be making the headlines tomorrow morning.

Lewsey is an interesting one, but I think he’ll miss out. I think Luke Fitzgerald will probably go ahead of Lewsey although both can provide cover for several positions.

Lots of good players…why not do a Woodward and take everyone you can think of??

  4. Haskell for me seems like he has a bad attitude = bad tourist

Care is great impact, never a starter but with 10 to go can change a game!

Cipriani, i think is the best out of Hook, Flood, Nicky Robinson alternatives. Again, never a starter but has ability to do something different.

Lewsey has been playing well, model professional and will be a great tourist. Can play numerous positions and will make a midweek team.

Would love to take Carling but rumour has it he wont complete level 3 on the Bleep test. Shame!

  5. Left field picks….. heard a rumour Matt Bananaman of Bath may be in with a shout. Play him on one wing, his tats on the other – may confuse the bokke on the high veldt. Lord help us.

  6. Think that there is definately a lack of star quality this year both o gara and jones are solid but nothing special. I just feel that there are not enough gamebreakers in the squad people like cipriani foden hook. I saw a feature on http://ur7s.com/ about who whould be in your lions sevens team you should check it out!!
