  1. A fairly strong team for first up game with a few “first choice players ” in the team and on the bench.I think we will see half back pairing changed at half time , however I expect everyone will get a game. Can’t wait!!!!

  2. I think we can assume Gatland is using this game to look at some players he’s not sure about, whilst bolstering it with a strong back row and experienced heads.
Some interesting choices in there, and some interesting omissions as well. I thought this would have been a good match for Biggar to play in. The Barbarians will obviously be targeting Sexton so he will probably be the Lions first casualty. I can see us winning this game but with a couple of injuries as well.

    1. Gatland has said he has picked from the players who have been in training camp these last couple of weeks i.e. not those in playoff games which will explain most of those omissions you are thinking off

  3. Here’s the opposition for Saturday:

    1. Aidan Ross (Bay of Plenty)
    2. Sam Anderson-Heather – Captain (Otago)
    3. Oliver Jager (Canterbury)
    4. Josh Goodhue (Northland)
    5. Keepa Mewett (Bay of Plenty)
    6. James Tucker (Waikato)
    7. Lachlan Boshier (Taranaki)
    8. Mitchell Dunshea (Canterbury)
    9. Jack Stratton (Canterbury)
    10. Bryn Gatland (North Harbour)
    11. Sevu Reece (Waikato)
    12. Dwayne Sweeney (Waikato)
    13. Inga Finau (Canterbury)
    14. Sam Vaka (Counties Manukau)
    15. Luteru Laulala (Counties Manukau)

    16. Andrew Makalio (Tasman)
    17. Tolu Fahamokioa (Wellington)
    18. Marcel Renata (Auckland)
    19. Matt Matich (Northland)
    20. Peter Rowe – Vice Captain (Wanganui)
    21. Richard Judd (Bay of Plenty)
    22. Jonah Lowe (Hawke’s Bay)
    23. Junior Ngaluafe (Southland)

Mostly second-string Super Rugby players or guys still looking for a SR contract.

Anything less than a comfortable Lions win will be alarming, I would say.

    1. So a few players who won’t mind roughing up the Lions? Do you think Sexton will be targeted?

    2. Loving the fact that they have selected Gatlands son for the first game. Let the mind games commence

  4. Think the big talking point for this game will be where he brings Farrell on! Will he come on at 10 to replace Sexton or as most of us hope at 12 to try out the Sex-Faz axis in a relatively safe environment?

    1. I’m not sure this one will be classed as a relatively safe environment. The oppo are all out to make a name for themselves and I can see this one being a bit rough – after all they have nothing to lose

      1. I’m afraid I’ve given the NZ Baa Baas yr name & address, just so that you can see for yrself if they really are going to be that ruff, you understand?

  5. Interesting side & also to see how Kyle Sinckler, Iain Henderson & Ross Moriarty go up front & ditto in the backs with Greig Laidlaw @ 1/2 with Sexton & with wing man Seymour, whom I like as he can leap for the high balls. Also interesting centre combo of Ben Te’o & Jonathan Joseph, Anthony Watson on the other wing & the entrepreneurial Stuart Hogg @ f/back. A few dirt trackers being given a shout? Whatever, may produce a bolter or 2 & seems to be an attacking line up to me. Not too much of a risk 1st up, but they will want to ko with a good start & this team could well be composed to do just that.

  6. Oops. Typo! Can’t even me own name.
