My British and Irish Lions Text XV

It has been a while since we selected a starting XV for the first Lions Test, and since one or two injuries and suspensions, there are some new names in the frame.

1. Gethin Jenkins
2. Jerry Flannery
3. Euan Murray
4. Paul O’Connell
5. Alun Wyn Jones
6. Tom Croft
7. David Wallace
8. Jamie Heaslip
9. Mike Blair
10. Ronan O’Gara
11. Shane Williams
12. Jamie Roberts
13. Brian O’Driscoll
14. Luke Fitzgerald
15. Rob Kearney

Jamie Roberts has played his way in after his performance for Cardiff against Leicester a couple of weeks ago, as has Mike Blair who will be desperate to seize the opportunity he has been given.

Let me know what you think.

  1. Croft isn’t even on the tour yet! Maybe you should select from the players McGeechan has chosen as a starting point. Don’t know how you still have Wynn Jones in your team after his embarressing display against Munster. Kearney won’t be able to get into the Leinster team this weekend so we cant really have him in the Lions team over Byrne. Shane Williams will get eaten out there. Either put Monye on that wing, or stick Roberts out there and Flutey in the centre.

  2. Croft will go – so why not stick him in to start the Test?
And Shane has proven that he can flourish against South Africa, look at his performances in the summer tests over there.

You can’t be picking and dropping players on the back of a single game – so AWJ should still be pushing for a place. But given the beef McGeech has taken I think Shaw or maybe Hines has to be in with a shout.

Kearney, for me, was the luckiest man on the plane and I don’t see him edging Byrne out of the side. But otherwise, fair enough.

  3. Hines is on the tour with the simple view that he will smash the feck out of Boks in midweek games, so I can’t see him getting in the team.

Has to be Byrne at full-back for me, what he has that Kearney doesn’t is that ability to hit the line at the perfect angle at the perfect time.

  4. Halfpenny is out of the first 2 weeks of the tour. They’re set to announce a replacement soon. I imagine it’ll be Armitage.

Halfpenny will rejoin the squad after his thigh injury sorts itself out i.e. midway through the tour – gutting.

  5. My concern (generally with the squad), is that looking over the names, there are few, if any, that stand out as real threats.

I think it would be difficult for any Brit (let alone, Saffer) to say ‘that guy will really worry the opposition’ perhaps with the exception of BOD. Don’t mistake me, I will be cheering for the Lions loader than most, but we seem to lack true world class.

On that note, I would say Monye should be in as he could put some fear into SA, a) because he is somewhat unknown to them and b) he has genuine gas. The 9/10 option of Blair and O’Gara is very luke warm, I would either have Phillips to start the battle at 9 or Ellis to run at them. At 10 we run out of options too quickly.

  6. Listened to most of the worlds’ opinion on “Quinlan the Barbarian”.
I do hope most of you have played our graceful and at sometimes brutal game????
There for the Grace of God go I!
Anyone to cast the first stone??????????????????????

  7. 1. Gethin Jenkins
    2. Ross Ford.
    3. Euan Murray
    4. Paul O’Connell
    5. Alun Wyn Jones
    6. Martin Williams.
    7. David Wallace
    8. Jamie Heaslip
    9. Mike Blair.
    10. Stephen Jones.
    11. Shane Williams
    12. Jamie Roberts
    13. Brian O’Driscoll
    14. Tommy Bowe.
    15. Lee Byrne.
    couple of enforced changes.

  8. the cast list’s changing on an almost daily basis, even before they start beating the bejaysus out of each other (this weekend’s heineken cup) and going up against various ‘up for it’ state sides once the actual tour starts…

flannery the latest casualty, out for the whole tour. halfpenny out for 10-14 days, hopes to rejoin in week 2, but his injury means tom shanklin WILL now be replaced, with armitage, lewsey and paterson among those mentioned. if i was picking today i would go:

    1. Gethin Jenkins
    2. Lee Mears
    3. Euan Murray
    4. Paul O’Connell
    5. Simon Shaw
    6. Joe Worsley
    7. Martyn Williams
    8. Jamie Heaslip
    9. Mike Phillips
    10. Stephen Jones
    11. Leigh Halfpenny
    12. Jamie Roberts
    13. Brian O’Driscoll
    14. Luke Fitzgerald
    15. Lee Byrne

bench: AN hooker, vickery, croft, wallace, blair, and two of: earls, williams (s) and flutey

as for the ‘quinlan the barbarian’ approach, i managed 15+ years of low-level senior rugby without feeling the urge to stick my fingers in someone’s eyes. if i had done, and been caught, i’d have expected to be sent off and suspended. what’s your point ty? that because we all do it that it should have been brushed aside? well we don’t, and it shouldn’t have been. or are you saying that those who haven’t played rugby shouldn’t be allowed their opinion?

  9. Although I would love to see both Croft and Blair in the team i find it hard to believe that Geech will use them as they weren’t his preferred choices to strat with, on the other hand they have the talent to make an impression on tour and as we all know from previous tours Geech is not such a proud man that he will not admit that certain guys are playing than others.

For the Lions to win somebody unexpected has to shine before the test math starts. That is why I like to have a few wild cards if one or two make an impact we might have those game-breakers as they say. People like Shaw, Worsley, Vickory, M Williams, O’Connell, O’Gara, S Jones, BOD, Byrne ect will do hat they always do and what they do is excellent but theLions need more to help these guys out.

People like Ferres, Bowe, Powell, Fitzgerld, Croft, Blair, Phillips, Ford (hope he goes instead of Flannery) Heaslip, GWJ and Monye have the talent to breakout and become world beaters. Not all of them will naturally but out of that list we need at least 5 out of those 11 names to do so.

Saying all that we need a maybe man at 10, Hook, Cipp, Vesty, Robinson, May whoever

    1- Jenkins
    2- Mears
    3- Murray
    4- O’Connell
    5- Shaw
    6- Wallace
    7- Williams
    8- Heaslip
    9- Phillips
    10- Jones
    11- Monye
    12- Roberts
    13- BOD
    14- Williams
    15- Byrne

All can change and a lot will on tour. Who wants it?

  10. I know this is a blog for a Lions XV but this is my SA XV against the Lions! AAAAWWWWWWHHHOOOOO!!!!

    1. Tendai “The Beast” Mtwarira
    2. Bismark du Plessis
    3. John Smit (think he’ll do good at Tighthead)
    4. Bakkis Botha
    5. Victot Matfield
    6. Schalk Burger
    7. Juan Smith
    8. Pierre Spies
    9. Fourie du Preez
    10. Morne Steyn
    11. Bryan Habana
    12. Jean de Villiers (if injured Wynand Olivier)
    13. Jacques Fourie
    14. JP Pieterson
    15. Zane Kirchner

do you guys think the Lions will be able to match the power and skill of this Bok XV?

  11. 1. Sheridan
    2. Mears
    3. Jenkins
    4. POC
    5. Jones
    6. Worsley
    7. Wallace
    8. Heaslip
    9. Ellis
    10. Jones
    11. Williams
    12. Flutey
    13. BOD
    14. Monye
    15. Byrne

    16. Jones
    17. Ford
    18. Croft
    19. Williams
    20. Phillips
    21. O’gara
    22. Roberts

  12. 1. Gethin Jenkins
    2. Jerry Flannery
    3. Murray
    4. POC
    5. Alun Wyn Jones
    6. Wallace
    7. Martyn Williams
    8. Andy Powell
    9. Mike Phillips
    10.Stephen Jones
    11. Shane Williams
    12. Jamie Roberts
    13. BOD
    14. Monye
    15. Lee Byrne

The reason that I have put Mike Phillips in sgrum Half over Blaire and Ellis is because of his physicall present. The Lions need him to run at his opponent and use his strenth, the same with Roberts and Andy Powell. And Monye impressed me in the six Nations against Scotland. My bench would be Flutey, Hook ( a kicking choice) Vickery, Heaslip and Bowe

  13. Good post Ruanp. Question is, will the SA selectors go with your namesake, the out of form and getting over an injury Pienaar? Does it depend on Saturday’s final? If Steyn slots a few more, they won’t be able to resist him for the 10 jersey.
De Villiers in the centers will bring experience, although the Boks are loaded with that commodity.

Can’t imagine the Lions playing Croft in a test – he’d get served up in a Bakkes Burger.

  14. 1 jenkins(sheridan was crap today)

    3 murray
    4 jones
    5 o’connell

    9 phillips
    10 o’gara
