Poll: Vote for the 2010 Player of the Year

The IRB have named Richie McCaw as the Player of the Year for the third time, but they didn’t ask us for our views on the matter.

As it happens, I probably would have chosen someone else, so we thought we’d see what other people think and whether McCaw deserves the accolade.

Choose one of the players below and feel free to justify your selection in the comments at the bottom – particularly if you pick ‘Other’.

  1. Haha. If Sinbad had been picked, no doubt he would have won this poll and the IRB award, but it’s slightly optimistic to think that a few good performances for Gloucester puts him on par with someone like Mils Muliaina!

  2. Used to think Muliaina the poorest of NZ’s backs, but he’s been absolutely brilliant all year – proved me totally wrong! No-brainer: it’s got to be him. Not that Read, McCaw, Kaino, Pocock, Cooper and Smith have been bad…

Ashton deserves a big mention (got to have one of our lads in there!)

  3. McCaw’s probably been the most influential but he spent so much of the autumn internationals so far offside that I can only presume that he was beyond the referee’s field of vision.

I think my vote might go for Steve Borthwick for inspirationally getting injured just at the end of the 6 Nations. By doing that he inadvertently sewed the seed for England’s subsequent improvement.

  4. Purely for how much he improved, Kurtley Beale. He was practically impossible to defend against by the end of the year. And that kick in Bloemfontein… definitely my pick.

  5. Why say in 3 words what you can say in two …

    Soane Tonga’Uiha.

The ultimate prop – scrummages like a demon, runs, offloads, scores tries. And to cap it all a really decent bloke!
