POLL: Who should start for Wales in the opening game of the Six Nations?

howley 6n
With the opening game a little over a week away, Six Nations fever is everywhere, and rugby fans the length and breadth of the nations involved are debating who should start in what position. This is a chance for you to have your say. Select your preferred XV from the options below, and, if you have time, explain your decisions in the comments section underneath.

A couple of things to point out: players are listed in their ‘best’ positions. As such, the cupboard may look a little bare when it comes to, say, centre, but in reality both James Hook and George North (listed as fly-half and outside back respectively) can do a more than respectable job there. Your best bet is to pick from those in the list, then outline any grievances/changes in a comment.

  1. Glad that Coombs was selected, but can’t understand why Lewis Evans wasn’t. He’d be my replacement for Dan Lydiate or play a fit Aaron Shingler at 6. Biggar should also be given the start at 10 and play there all tournament. If he mucks up now, then it would be the last nail in his Wales career

  2. There was talk at the launch yesterday of Warburton playing 6 with Tipuric at 7, which could be interesting.

It might make for an interesting match at the end – Wales with no 6s, England with no 7s!

  3. I think you should have made Ryan Jones a 2nd row option as most people suspect that is where he will play for the first game at least.

Back row is difficult – I wanted to pick Navidi but if Jones isn’t in the 2nd row then he has to be in the pack so it’s Jones/Fale/Warbs.

Surprised to see so many still backing George North given he hasn’t done anything of note since the last time we played Ireland and has been dire for the Scarlets.

    • Don’t know much about Navidi Brighty, is he a good prospect?

As for North, he strikes me as one of these players who picks up their form in the big games.

Who would you select instead of him? (assuming that Ha’Penny is nailed on for selection)

    • Who would you pick ahead of North? Eli Walker? Would be risky to throw him in at the deep end on the opener against Ireland…

Agreed about Ryan Jones, he should start in the 2nd row.

      • Yes, Eli Walker I would go for. I wouldn’t see it as a deep end – he coped well against Toulouse and Leics. He’s exciting, he gives Wales another option outside the bludgeon wings we’ve started moving towards.

  4. Good to see Hibbard finally getting some support. Matthew Rees has been terrible for us recently and Hibbard is one of our few players who has good domestic form.
