RBS 6 Nations 2011: England team to face Scotland

Martin Johnson has made just one enforced change to his side to take on Scotland on Sunday.

Alex Corbisiero replaces the injured Andrew Sheridan once again, and Paul Doran-Jones and Tom Croft come onto the bench. There is no place for Courtney Lawes in the squad though.

Will this team keep the Grand Slam dream alive?

  1. Surprised that there’s no Lawes on the bench, he’s looked fitter than Croft of late – who I feel that despite the seeming inevitably, if he is only at 80% as he stated last week, then he’s lucky to be in ahead of Fourie. Re Lawes I can only assume Johnson knows something that we do not.

    No surprises other than that.

  2. I heard somewhere that Shaw was struggling with injury a bit, but if he’s ok then can’t complain too much with keeping the current set-up – Lawes is unlucky (and Croft is perhaps a bit fortunate) but we’re starting to develop strength in depth in those positions which is good to see, and no-one in the pack deserved to be dropped.

It’s clear now that Johnno isn’t going to ‘experiment’ before the world cup and is instead focusing on building a core team and giving them time to develop. The Churchill Cup is going to be key for players on the edge of the squad to give it a last shot and make an impression – Manu Tuilagi for one, Simpson-Daniel if he’s fit again in time, perhaps Joe Simpson to give a late run at overtaking Care for the bench slot. Any others?

  3. Justin – There’s also the world cup warm-up matches to give chances to the fringe options. I would hope that they’ll be used to fine tune the WC squad rather than help the current side gel, or at least I would expect the 3 matches to be a combination of the two.

In terms of WC squad, I imagine MJ will go with 3 SHs anyway so that’d be Simpson’s spot – unless his injury curse strikes again.

In terms of the current EPS backs-wise (barring injury) I’d say that Ashton, Cueto, Tindall, Hape, Foden, Banahan, Wilkinson, Flood, Youngs & Care will have places sewn up. Hodgson and Simpson will be likely to go as third choice half backs so that leaves 2 extra spots. Then it’ll be a question of for how Johnson sees his cover options. Armitage I imagine will go as FB who can cover wing and centre, then Johnson has to pick from a wing (JSD, Strettle, Sharples??) or a centre (Flutey, Tuilagi, Barritt, Allen, Twelvetrees??).

I won’t go into the forwards as it’ll end up being too much of a tangent!
