RBS 6 Nations 2011: Ireland team to play France

Declan Kidney has named the following side to take on France at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.

There’s just one change following the disappointing perfomance in Italy, with Jamie Heaslip returning to the side at Number 8 and Sean O’Brien moving to the blindside flank.

Can they live with the French on Sunday?

  1. Its bizarre frankly.

Back row – presumably is Heaslip wasn’t fit, there would be no changes? Leamy on bench, not Jenno – what is Plan B if it doesn’t work. Still unbalanced, and poor Wally – proper legend who is being flogged to death – we need him in the RWC squad to offer an example to the younger guys e.g. Ruddock, and the poor lad is being asked to do something he just can’t do any more.

Scrum half – Jesus, seriously?? TOL has been rubbish all year, and he plays the type of game that will not beat France. If we were serious, we would pick a team with a speedy 9, a proper openside, and some locks that can offload – this pack with this 9 is not going to be able to beat the gainline and put holes in the French defensive line.

Back 3 – there are 5 players to choose from:
Trimble, a wing who has been playing wing and is in good form.
Fitzgerald a centre who thinks he is a full-back who hasn’t been playing anywhere.
Earls, a wing who thinks he is a centre who has been in poor form, playing centre.
McFadden, a center who has played a few games on the wing because of injuries, who is in good form.
Wallace, a centre who is playing centre and is in decent form.
Either way – Trimble is your #1 man – and he’s not even on the bench!

Deccie is deluded. He is worse than Eddie. Seriously depressed…

  2. Trimble missing is slightly strange, but I think I can see where Kidney is coming from in keeping things the same. This side was pretty awful in Rome, but they were silly errors more than anything fundamentally wrong.

I also think there was probably some complacency against Italy, which there certainly won’t be this weekend.

On paper, this is still a good Ireland side. There are question marks over the form of a few of the players, but they’ve delivered before and Sunday would be a good time to do it again. There’s little sense in panicking in the wake of a sloppy away victory.

  3. Disagree Hutch, there are fundamental problems there.

We are (apparently) trying to play a running game but without a passing scrum half and a proper openside this cannot be done. If you watch Leinster this year, Shane Jennings is as fundamental to proceedings as Sean O’Brien’s eye-catching carries. He pops up everyehere, linking up play and is happy to play with his face in the mud winning quick ruck ball. All our back rows want to carry the ball.

As for O’Leary, he is out of form, low on confidence, he has a slow pass and his fringe defence will be of little value against a Frnace team that wants to move the ball wide and quickly. There are any number of reasons why Reddan or Stringer would have been a better option for this game.

The feeling persists that Kidney is overly loyal to certain Munster players.

  4. Agree Shane.

I actually think it would do TOL good to be dropped from the squad entirely and play a few Magners games, get his confidence up and try and get some form. What happens if he has a shocker (again) and is dropped for Murrayfield?

And, yet again, the bench … Without patronizing Italy, from 50 mins on, they started changing things, and from 65 mins on, they were well on top. Irish coaches have no subs policy at all (Eddie was noticeably bad as well). If they did, it is well disguised – what was Paddy Wallace doing on the bench for 76 mins while Dorce has a shocker?

I foresee France starting and finishing like a train (unless of course they are 30 points up by then and give up), with us maybe nicking a try in between. We could get carried out!

  5. if u think about the form players front row ok maybe hooker but best has a better through than croinin so i would keep that choice tough call between healy and court!! neither word class healy could be tho so needs game time before world cup poc and doc need to be dropped cos poc hasn’t played since last year and doc is one dimensional
look at touhys powerful runs for ulster cullens leader ship and lineout work for leinster i would pick the leinster back row as it is ballanced with fit ferris on the bench to add a punch after 50 mins without him wallace on the bench 9 has to be reddan or stringer starting don’t mind who sexton is more use to reddan tho! would have o’leary on bench for the options incase of injuryies
sexton defo the starting option darcy and drico bar one bad performance have to start and mc fadden and earls and fitz deserve another chance trimble if fit should claim the bench as mcfadden can play center!

  6. its world cup year, france take these years seriously.
positions 1-10 won the grand slam last year,so they have a settled squad.
the backs are classy as always.

So, France will beat Ireland and possibly hump them!

Irelands front 5 dont look gritty enough….

  7. Time to be brave and radical Declan, allowing for the enforced absences of Rob Kearney, Tommy Bowe , Geordan Murphy, Stephen Ferris and Jerry Flannery

    MY current favorite 22

    15- Luke Fitzgerald , 14- Andrew Trimble , 13-Eoin O’Malley , 12- Fergus McFadden , 11- Keith Earls , 10-Jonathan Sexton, 9-Peter Stringer; 8- Jamie Heaslip , 7-Shane Jennings, 6- Sean O’Brien , 5-Paul O’Connell, 4- Leo Cullen (captain) , 3-Mike Ross, 2- Rory Best , 1-Tom Court .
    Replacements: 16-Sean Cronin , 17-Cian Healy, 18- Donncha O’Callaghan , 19- Chris Henry , 20-Eoin Reddan . , 21-Paddy Wallace, 22-BoD

  8. I have to agree with the majority of people and say I’m not too happy with this.
Happy enough with the front row but do worry against the French who are so strong, Court might have been a better option but only time will tell. Leo should get the nod and donncha on the bench. Heaslip at 8 is fine as he is quality, but would deccie give jennings a chance for the love of god. He is our best 7 and would bring balance to the back row and the team. Put wallace on the bench and def bring him on when the game opens up. Leamy spent all the the time against Italy argueing with the ref and got sin binned, and he get a place on the bench. I nearly guarantee he will get on the pitch at sometime against France, which annoys me cause Jennings never got anytime against Italy.
Happy enough with the backs as they will play better after the game time against Italy, all except OLeary who had a bad game and is short on game time. I know reddan hasn’t played brilliant in the past for Ireland but he is in form at the moment and I know is not as good as oleary defensively but is still handy enough as everyone seen by his tackle on Parisse.
SJennins should be on the team orat least on the bench, wallce should not be playing with trimble available or J.Murphy. Wallace is ont good enough at this level and we have enough cover at fly half.
I don’t want to criticize Munster players too much but some of them should not be starting with players in form not even in the panel. I supported Munster for years and I know they have given everything for the jersey but I still feel that a number of player are there because Decie coached them at Munster before. Decie honestly needs to get some kind of result against France but I feel we will lose badly. Again our backrow is unbalanced with all of them runners. We ran straight at Italy and they knocked us back, well France will be bigger, faster. I hope I’m wrong.
