  1. Happy with that team think we have a great chance of beating Wales. Maybe Henry at 7 and O Brien at 6 other than that can’t complain just hope Ross stays fit and O Mahony doesn’t give away too many penalties

    1. This is nearly as good a time as I could have hoped for. I just think too often when it comes down to a choice between an ulster player and a munster (or leinster player) the ulster player will lose out. How much better can Chris Hnery play before he gets that starting berth?

Other than that, I share your sentiment Niall that my prayers are all for Mike Ross to stay fit though I am glad Kidney has seen that it would be madness to persist with Bent.

    2. With Henry at 7 and O’Brien and Heaslip that would’ve have been an all go-forward backrow, I don’t think POM carries as well as Henry but at least he’s not off the team, just on the bench. The thing is when Ferris comes back Kidney will have POM on the bench and no Henry in sight.

POM gave away 4 penalties against Argentina to Henry’s 1 penalty…

  2. as an englishman, i think that this team is awful… for us.

kidney has picked a decent team here… good that he has seen to go for fitzpartick over bent. only complaints would be that ROG is lucky to be there, i would have any of the 3 younger 10 instead. similarly, i think henderson is unlucky, and fitzgerald for earls would have been a good shout. but to be honest that is being knit picky, its a good irish team.

i think with england beating NZ and france going so well, the irish have been able to fly under the radar a bit this year, but in my eyes they are a serious title contender.

  3. Kidney needs to get a grip in terms of picking the back row

There is so much debate over the value of a true open side and there has always tended to a lack of a true open side in Ireland.

Its so ridiculous that whilst O’Brien, who is a fantastic player but not a true Open side , is out of form and Chris Henry, a true Open side and is so in form available but Kidney still sticks with O’Brien. Surly giving Henry his deserved opportunity and then using O’Brien as a late impact sub is the just selection?

    1. Would definitely agree with you Peter. Another option would have been to shift O’Brien to 6 and have Henry at 7 – I think plenty of people will be surprised Kidney hasn’t opted for that. O’Mahoney’s form has been good, but nowhere near that of Henry.

      1. o mahany deserves 2 start he has been de bac bone of munster rugby and has carryed them into de last 8 in de heinken cup.

the real winner is jamie heaslip. he is septic. how kidney sees anything in him is beyond me.

also tommy o donnell is another man who i tink cud of got the 6, 7, or 8 jersey. he has been playing exceptional rugby

  4. Nice team. Ireland had better hope that Bod and more importantly, Ross, stay fit.

Only complaints if I were Irish would be no place for Henry in the starting team and not much impact from the bench amongst the backs. The replacements are solid players but that’s it. Ireland better hope they are winning after 60 mins and not chasing the game

Be interesting to see Gilroy and Zebo at this level – will their defence be up to handling the big Welsh boys on the wing?

  5. gilroy wont be able for the strength of the big walsh lads. earls should of de shout for de 14 shirt ahead of gilroy.

  6. Haha. Because Earls’s defence is good? Go have a look at the Castres game to see Gilroys defence.

The lucky one for me is SOB. Those outside Ireland would think he is a cert but for me O’mahoney and Henry have much better form (both are big reasons in their teams progression to QFs). O brien has been mediocre (by his own high standards).

It is too soon for Tom o donnell, but he looks like he has a lot of potential.

  7. going to defend Heaslip he isn’t doing what he use to do and run through people and carry alot of ball but his tackling and turnovers are second to none he is always leinsters leading tackler and he is brilliant defending his own line and behind a retreating scrum theirs no one better to control the ball and make sure we retain possession till the support can ruck.

  8. I think this team will be lucky to win a match. Can only see the scrum going backwards especially against England. Disappointed he picked 2 Ulster players would rather he hadn’t bothered. half these players wouldnt get on the Ulster bench

    1. Would love to hear the logic of the scrum going backwards? Healy and Best are tipped for the Lions tour and Ross is a fine tighthead. Behind them they have two big shunters in McCarthy and Ryan.

I’m an Ulster fan and I’m probably biased but it is strange that the in form Irish province only gets two spots on the team… Nonetheless it just means we’ll have more frontliners available for our game against the Ospreys :D

      1. definitely understand your point about only 2 ulster players. i suppose bowe and ferris would both be in if fit. (so thats two more) and tuohy would be somewhere in the squad if fit too i reckon.

paul marshall must have slept with kidney’s wife, because i dont see what else he would have to do to get selected.

similarly jackson (or keatley or madigan for that matter) SHOULD be in over ROG. and henry is unlucky not to be starting.

      2. Bowe and Ferris are not available. Are you not pleased to see Gilroy being selected? It’s a strong Ulster representation. Trimble is not in to give Fitzgerald a chance after returning from injury. We’ve got too many good wing backs at the moment and not enough quality forwards arguably.

  9. Big boo boo not playing chris Henry. He has been so consistent at a high level for a long time. I despair that Gordon Darby is still being selected ………why? Has Declans mind been invaded by Eddie osullivan?

  10. Thats almost a complete side and for the future that looks very good for Ireland.

All they need is to find replacements in the midfield when Darcy and O’driscoll pack it in.

Chris Henry at 7, Ferris at 6 and O’Mahoney at 8 and thats you future back row

    1. i’d like to see mcfadden get more of a run at 12, as he is a possible successor to D’Arcy. Cave looks like a replacement for BOD. the likes of luke marshall are good too. plus both fitzgerald and earls have spent a fair bit of time in the centres (which frees up space for gilroy and zebo on the wings). keep in mind that tommy bowe is still around, and he can play wing or 13 too.

  11. i agree Henry, Ferris and POM will be the future backrow but i am sure tommy o donnell will be in with a shout as well

i also wud lik 2 c Macfadden at 12 alot more darcy days are over.

i dont care how well paul marshall is playing he wont get the 9 shirt ahead of murray. murray is playing out of his skin lately and is scoring well for munster. murray is too phyiscal for marshall 2 get his place

  12. Gordon D’Arcy is a national disgrace. I would rather have a burning cardboard cut out sat in the midfield in the hope that some Welsh player ran into it than him. Anyone who says otherwise has not been watching closely enough over the last half decade when he has been down, out and just pathetic.

  13. I will admit Darcy has not been great recently but thats quite harsh.

Ireland need to find an inside centre and an openside flanker.

Chrs Henry is probably the answer but he is already 28 so you can probably get about 4 years out of him.

Are there any young 7 coming through at the moment?

Keith Earls can replace BOD at 13 but inside centre is a bit of a problem.

Still believe that the Ireland management wasted James Downeys best days.

  14. dats only scutter if Gilroy deverses to start Zebo definely does. if tommy bowe was dere he wud start instead of Gilroy FACT

i no o donnell is not a 7 but he is playing super rugby for munster at 7 and he played super for the wolfhounds de other nite aswell
