Report from France: Mike Phillips to be fired from Bayonne

*UPDATE*
Reports have since emerged that Phillips has been suspended, not yet formally released from his club Bayonne. The club are to release a statement in the next few hours on the matter, according to their Twitter feed. However, also on Twitter, Midi Olympique claim that Phillips will still be fired.

Earlier, reports from Midi Olympique and RugbyRama suggested that Mike Phillips had been released from his contract at Bayonne.

The Wales and British and Irish Lions scrum-half was in hot water last week for arriving at a video-analysis session drunk, following a bender after the team’s loss to Wasps in the Amlin Challenge Cup. According to the reports, Phillips will receive a letter on Saturday morning saying his contract has been terminated with the club. This is not the first time he has been in trouble for drinking with his club, and it was clearly the final straw.

What might follow next for Phillips is unclear, but presumably he will return to Wales if his future in France is over. He is in the squad for the Autumn Internationals, but beyond that he will need to be playing regular club rugby.

Just in time for the proposed temporary central contracts from the WRU, eh?

  1. Hadn’t quite anticipated that. I was expecting a ban from Bayonne and the WRU to take Phillips for the AIs and Bayonne to get snarky with him playing during a ban, but the contract termination escalated a little more quickly than I might have anticipated.

  2. Don’t be so quick to report “news” without an official source! Looks like Phillips has been suspended at this stage, not sacked, with an official statement to come tonight.

    • It was actually more a case of a mistranslation – I was going off what Midi were reporting, thinking it said he ‘had’ received a letter last Saturday, when actually they’re saying he’s ‘set to’ receive one this Saturday. My French lecturers at uni would not be impressed…

Anyway, duly amended – apologies for that.

  3. Mikey goes mental again. Who’s gonna sign him now?

Careful mind – I think Liam might find this boring so really you shouldn’t be writing a blog on it…

  4. You can imagine Gatland doing a Johnson – “rugby player has a drink – shock horror”!

Someone will sign him for sure, just look how many chances Henson, Cipriani, O’Connor have had. At least until he can’t play rugby to a decent standard anymore and then he’ll be out of the revolving door without a second thought.

  5. It doesn’t even matter because Gatland will play him regardless. Even poor form couldn’t keep Phillips from starting.
