Nevin Spence died on Saturday 15th September in a tragic farming accident, along with his brother and father in Hillsborough, Co. Down.
A extremely promising player, he became a Ravenhill favourite very quickly, playing either in the centre or on the wing he was a fantastic runner and broke many defensive lines.
He was a not only a great player but a friendly gent who took enormous pride in taking time to talk to fans young and old, and always one to share a smile and a joke. A huge supporter of his family, he promoted his sister’s artwork and this is the testament of a selfless man, who will be missed by family, friends, Ulster, Ireland, and the Ravenhill faithful.
Tributes for Nevin have been coming from far and wide. One of Ulster’s Opponents on Friday night, BJ Botha tweeted, “So very sad and shocked to hear the news about Nevin Spence, his father and brother, you will be sorely missed my friend #prayers”. New Zealand Side, Blues, tweeted “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of @ulsterrugby player Nevin Spence who was tragically killed in a farm accident.”
This is proof, if it were needed, that Rugby truly is a family, irrespective of support, nationality, or province: Rugby joins us all.
