Rugby World Cup 2011 Predictions: Round 2

I’m pretty happy with my first round of picks that saw me into the Top 1% on SportGuru, 90th overall – although still only 5th in The Rugby Blog pool.

Here are my predictions for the midweek games. The tricky pick is Russia v USA, mainly because I know very little about either side. I’m leaning towards the Americans though, with the magnificent Todd Clever to steer his team past what I’d expect to be a big Russian pack (based solely on stereotypes).

Scotland v Georgia should be interesting, and I won’t mention those people that were slating me for predicting a narrow Scottish victory over Romania. I think this one will be close as well, but I’m still backing the Scots to make it two from two.

Let me know what you think.

Samoa v Namibia: Samoa by 19
Tonga v Canada: Tonga by 8
Scotland v Georgia: Scotland by 10
Russia v USA: USA by 8
New Zealand v Japan: New Zealand by 41

  1. Russia have the new Northampton Saint Vasiliy Artemiev – knocked my school out of the Junior Cup when he played in Ireland 10 years ago. He’s lightning fast and could cause the USA trouble. Scotland should be fine – still backing them to take out Argentina and make it to the quarters. It’s a pretty bad round of matches to be perfectly honest – not that that’ll stop me getting up to watch them.

  2. Russia are coached by Kingsley Jones formerly of Ebbw Vale and Sale with Darren Morris coaching the forwards .Brief feature about them on ScrumV this week ,the forwards did look big lumps and Kingsley hinted that Russia v USA is still seen as a bit tasty even post Cold War. Gone for rhe Russian win myself.

Impressed by Kingsley’s apparant grasp of Russian too .

  3. Hi, thanks for the time and effort you put into giving this info, I am not a rugby guru but because of your prediction and and explanations I know understand the teams and game better.

    thanks V

  4. Your predictions have been more or less on par. The Canada V Tonga game could have gone either way – great game. AB’s to win by ~40 may not be far off.
