RWC Warm-Up: Wales team to face Argentina

Warren Gatland has named his side to take on Argentina this weekend as Wales continue their Rugby World Cup preparations.

The headline news is that Adam Jones, Martyn Williams, Lee Byrne and Leigh Halfpenny return to the starting line up, whilst James Hook starts at fly-half after an impressive showing there at the end of last week’s game.

What are your thoughts? Having beaten England, are Wales more of a certainty to reach the knock out stages?

Update: Ryan Jones has been forced to withdraw from the team with a calf injury. Andy Powell takes his place at number 8, with Jonathan Thomas on the bench. Martyn Williams is captain.

L Byrne (Clermont Auvergne); L Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues), J Davies (Scarlets), J Roberts (Cardiff Blues), G North (Scarlets); J Hook (Perpignan), T Knoyle (Scarlets); P James (Ospreys), R Hibbard (Ospreys), A Jones (Ospreys), B Davies (Cardiff Blues), A-W Jones (Ospreys), D Lydiate (Newport Gwent Dragons), M Williams (Cardiff Blues, captain), A Powell (Sale Sharks).

  1. A much stronger looking frontrow, there’s no way England would have had such dominance at the scrum against this welsh pack. Nice to see Hibbard back who will add experience and size to the front row along with Adam jones

  2. Andy Powell? Not really sure it’s worth the risk. Certainly in new Zealand. He needs far better discipline off the pitch. Good to see Ryan Jones back as captain for 1 game. Glad aled brew is getting another chance. I think he’d be a very useful sub at the world cup.

  3. Looks as if Delve has missed the boat and Powell is to be given the chance instead .I’m told by someone who went to the “open door” training session that Powell looked impressive and particularly wound up smashing Ryan Jones back yards in one collision If he can repeat that form in play then he will justify inclusion on playing grounds.

Anyone who has seen the last Lions tour DVD will realise that a guy like Powell can be an asset to squad morale on a long overseas tour , it’s up to the management to keep a lid on any excesses .
