Sam Underhill to miss Six Nations 2019

Sam Underhill

Flanker Sam Underhill has been ruled out of the entire Six Nations following surgery on his ankle.

He was one of the standout performers for England in the Autumn, particularly against New Zealand, and it’s another injury blow for Eddie Jones.

Tom Curry should be fit again and we can be cautiously optimistic about Billy Vunipola, but Underhill’s injury once again exposes England’s lack of options at openside flanker.

How would you like to see England’s back row line up against Ireland in that all-important first match?

  1. Lack of options caused by the England back row curse, but not lack of options in terms of ‘able’players within the system. Seems every time England find an answer in their back row, be it 6,7 or 8 injury strikes and unsettles the balance and its back to looking at 2nd or 3rd choice in line. With the injury woes we have had in the back row for some time now, its like we need 3 choices in each position able to cut it on the international stage – but its near on impossible to achieve this without chopping and changing every test which is not the answer!

I fear that the style of rugby Underhill plays he will be on the injury list a lot and he may become another ‘what if’ on the international stage! I hope not.

  2. Wilson, Curry, Vunipola would be close to first choice back row. I would have Robshaw and Morgan in the squad, and then the question is: who would be back up openside flanker?

    1. For me it’s a toss up between Kvesic, Ludlow and Ludlam. Knowing Ed’s penchant for youth, i imagine it’ll be one of the latter two.

  3. Don Armand has pretty much showed he doesn’t fit in with the system and has played very mediocrely since his last cap, Jones might use this to fill Dombrandt in the squad or replace Underhill with a genuine openside such as Kvesic or Will Evans.

  4. Good shout on Kvesic. I’m really hoping Gustard keeps Dombrandt at 8 as with Willis and Hill we have some great options at 6 for the future, while 8 looks a bit bare.

  5. Surely kvesic must come into the reckoning, especially if Ed goes like for like rather than shoehorning a six into the seven position?
How many more injuries will befall us before feb? We could do with some goodwill from the Rugby Gods!

  6. I’d like to see Robshaw lined up as Underhill’s replacement.. if I were an Irishman! Seriously though, what are the options & what the eff will Jones actually do.. in replacing Underhill? Clifford, Curry, Kvesic? Maybe, even Wilson? I’d go for the Kvesic, but don ‘t see EJ doing same, esp as K now plays 8 for Exeter. So.. dunno.
