Scotland names squad for Six Nations 2014

Scott Johnson has named his squad for the upcoming Six Nations championship.

Uncapped 23-year-old Edinburgh Rugby winger Dougie Fife is named in a senior Scotland squad for the first time. Fife, a product of Edinburgh’s EDP system and also nurtured by the Currie club, has been in prolific form for the Capital pro-club, scoring five tries in his last seven outings.

There is one other uncapped player in the 36-man squad, Glasgow Warriors’ openside flanker Chris Fusaro, who was included in the Scotland squad at this stage last season and also before the 2013 Autumn Tests.

The squad contains 16 Glasgow Warriors, 11 from Edinburgh Rugby and nine Exiles.

Scotland head coach Scott Johnson said: “We’ve been watching Dougie closely. He’s worked hard over the last 12 months, from being part of the A squad this time last year, to becoming a first-choice selection at Edinburgh Rugby and now to becoming a proven try scorer in the Rabo. He deserves this selection.

“We do have competition in the back-row and there are other players knocking on the door who may feature for the Scotland A team against England Saxons at the end of this month. Chris Fusaro had a terrific game in the Heineken Cup at the weekend and I’ve been impressed by just how explosive some of our back-row contenders have been in their club sides.”

“We will announce an A squad next week for the match against England Saxons at Scotstoun at the end of the month and, as I see it, a number of players could yet force their way into the senior squad during the Six Nations,” he explained.

  1. Unsurprised but a little disappointed not to see Roddy Grant called up for the main squad. He’s been on terrific form recently and I think it’s about time he was given the chance to prove himself at international level.

Shame Visser is still missing but it’s good to see Hogg and Rennie back in action. It’s a fairly strong side – potential for a repeat of last year’s upset?

I think the Scotts will be keeping their fingers crossed that the sky will open during all of their matches.

  2. Scott Johnston has been quoted saying that he now only sees Kelly Brown as an openside. this is surley bad news for Chris fusaro who must merit a cap by now! Agree that if fit Ross Rennie is the man for the job but he appears to be made of glass and aint played rugby for a long while (he had 70 mins for edinburgh accies in the british and irish cup last weekend and has not fetured for edinburgh for ages)

In recent times scotland have played there best rugby when they have had a poacher in the seven jersey and for me, until Rennie can prove his fitness we need to get fusaro in the 7 shirt and give him a free reign to prove if he has got it or not (im pretty sure he has)
