Select Wales’ Rugby World Cup Team

Here’s your chance to put yourself in Warren Gatland’s shoes and pick the Welsh starting XV for the Rugby World Cup.

Andy Powell

Our previous ‘team selector’ features have thrown up one or two interesting selections, and there is plenty of competition for places in the Wales side, particularly in the back row, and there’s always the question of where James Hook should play.

Take the series of polls below and we’ll see the team that emerges – and ask your friends to vote for more robust results!

  1. I don’t understand how people are picking halfpenny ?? He hasn’t played all season and isn’t that got that good try record ! Brew on the other hand is far and away the inform wing in Wales yet people overlook him.
THen theres burn , hasn’t played well for years and getting picked on past success, stoddard is in form and shows real desire when he pulls on the Wales jersey

    1. Same thought crossed my mind actually…I wonder if Gatland will also pick on past form?!

Looks like Roberts and Hook are the preferred centres, but Jon Davies was excellent in the Six Nations, and there’s a strong case for starting him ahead of Roberts.

42% (so far) going for Hook at fly-half…interesting.

  2. The battle between Hook and Stephen Jones will be interesting to watch. 49% (Hook) plays 51% (Jones) right now.

I was very impressed by Jon Davies this year; he was Wales’ strongest centre if I’m honest. As for Halfpenny – you’re right Ben. It seems as though his injury is of real concern for Warren Gatland..

But come on then, own up – who voted for Henson??

  3. picking andy powell and mike philips on the same team is a big call… least the opposition is guaranteed a good night out after the game!

  4. My one would be…

    1. Gethin Jenkins

    2. Matthew Rees (c)

    3. Adam Jones

    4. Bradley Davies

    5. Alun Wyn Jones

    6. Dan Lydiate

    7. Sam Waburton

    8. Gareth Delve

    9. Dwayne Peel

    10. Stephen Jones

    11. Shane Williams

    12. James Hook

    13. Jamie Roberts

    14. Aled Brew

    15. Lee Byrne

    16. Richard Hibbard

    17. Craig Mitchell

    18. Ryan Jones

    19. Toby Faletalu

    20. Mike Phillips

    21. Jonathan Davies

    22. Morgan Stoddart

  5. Ben i voted Halfpenny and Byrne but its true i think Stoddart deserves a place but maybe on the wing instead of Halfpenny? I haven’t seen enough of Brew recently tbh but his power could balance the back three, as neither shane or Halpeeny bring direction (maybe you’d have enough direction in the centres if you pick Davies and Roberts?).

Could the same point about past form be applied to Gethin Jenkins? how much did he play this year? or is it the case that James is too much of a step down regardless of form compared to the back 3 issue. I think if Gethin proves fitness in the warm ups he starts…

  6. I wanted to pick preisland as my fullback but wasn’t an option hook at fly half davis and roberts in the centre! wings are hard to choose i picked stodard and not shane williams he is a spent force and his weaknesses can cost the team in my opinion!

  7. Seems to me that both Stoddart and Brew tend to make at least one major defensive error per game

As such, I’d prefer Byrne and Halfpenny

  8. You should not exclude a player because of a lack of game time due to injury until you have seen them in the warm ups. With the work they will do in camp over the next six weeks it will only take three or four games for a player to be match fit. I would rule out Henson though because I just dont believe he is fully foucused on playing rugby.
There are a lot of combustible characters in that Welsh squad so I hope Warren has plenty of activities organised to entertain them otherwise we could be reading about “Welsh Players On Golf Buggy Rampage Outside Nite Club While Singing Offensive Songs.”

  9. Seriously? People want Lee Byrne? Even when he was on good form all he did was kick it into orbit and as such give possession away these days he is still trying that but not even doing it well any more. We need someone who will keep ball in hands. Or at least kick well.

  10. My one would be…

    1. Gethin Jenkins
    2. Matthew Rees (c)
    3. Adam Jones
    4. Ryan Jones
    5. Alun Wyn Jones
    6. Dan Lydiate
    7. Sam Waburton
    8. Gareth Delve
    9. Tavis Knoyle
    10. Stephen Jones
    11. Aled Brew
    12. James Hook
    13. Jon Davies
    14. George North
    15. Morgan Stoddart

    16. Paul James
    17. Richard Hibbard
    18. Craig Mitchell
    19. Bradley Davies
    20. Toby Faletau
    21. Mike Phillips
    22. Jamie Roberts

anyone who picks lee byrne / shane williams / gavin henson / mike phillips is living in the 2008! full front row on the bench for game game v SA!

  11. Luc, I agree with you about Phillips, Byrne and Henson, but Shane still has something that no other player in the squad has. As long as he declares himself fit I think he should play.

I don’t understand Richie Rees being omitted at all. I like Knowle but he’s still very green. Is Peel even going?? He clearly should but him playing in England is causing a lot of problems. It’ll be interesting to see how Delve goes. Had a great season down under, can he fit back into the Welsh back row? It’s arguably the only area where Wales have genuine strength in depth now.

    1 G.Jenkins

  13. GUTTED!!! just viewed on u tube Odriscoll being injured by NZ in Lions tour. THAT! was a spear tackle and needs LAW to eliminate from the game. I believe there should be another category of dangerous tackle a DUMP tackle which is closer description of Warburton’s sin and shouldnt be an automatic red card. The law as it stands is over proscriptive
