Shane Williams to retire after the Rugby World Cup

Wales and Ospreys’ winger and former IRB World Player of the Year, Shane Williams, has exclusively revealed that he plans to retire from international rugby after the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The admission comes in S4C’s new series Shane Williams: Rygbi a Mwy, to be broadcast in full on Friday 10 September, 21:00. Shane has speculated about his international future in the past but hadn’t yet confirmed his plans – until now.

During the candid interview, Shane admits that he plans to give his all to the current season in the hope of securing a place on the flight to New Zealand.

“I want to decide myself when I finish playing and not have that decision taken away from me by anyone else. It depends how far Wales go in next year’s World Cup finals and whether I’m picked, but my last game in a Welsh shirt will be during the World Cup.”

Rygbi a Mwy offers viewers an opportunity to learn more about some of our favourite present and past rugby stars, including Stephen Jones, Gareth Edwards, Clive Rowlands, Gwyn Jones, Gareth Davies and Ieuan Evans.

  1. Shane has been a good servant to Welsh rugby, it would be better for him to retire on his terms, thant do to a bad injury.

  2. Indeed. Fingers crossed that he makes it then – there’s a long year of rugby to get through in which injury is certainly not out of the question!

  3. Will be a big loss – thankfully we finally have some real talent coming through on the wing. Obviously halfpenny and Tom James (if he ever sorts his head out and stops acting the pillock to the Welsh management) but also the likes of Prydie and Phillips who have been trainign with the welsh team (and Prydie getting games) and George North at Llanelli is likely to have a big season according to some who’s opinion I trust

Also been told to watch out for Ospreys youngster Eli Walker who is meant to be a big, fast unit who knows where the tryline is.

  4. Cant belive he’s going! Hes the best winger ever, hes like my Hero tbh he’s a ture legend an one of the best players on the whole of the welsh team not gonna be the same without him. LEDGEND :)
