Six Nations 2018: Scotland Team to Play England

Finn Russell

Gregor Townsend has named an unchanged starting line up to face England this weekend.

Where do you think are the main threats for England here?

  1. That back line is full of talent that would get into other 6 nations sides, but can you say the same for the pack?

If I were Jones, I’d be keeping this game tight. I honestly wouldn’t have any of those Scotland forwards over their England counterparts and I don’t think is too one-eyed. Gray is a great player but I’d still pick Itoje and Launchbury over him.

  2. That front row is going to get mullered. Like Jacob said the back line looks really good. Feeling confident (but not overly so!).

  3. Yep. Up the jumper stuff for England I reckon. Smash it up the middle, rinse and repeat, and try not to give away too many bloody penalties!

  4. Personally wouldn’t have more than one player from the Scottish XV over their likely opposite numbers even in the back line. Hogg being the one exception.

    1. I would have George instead of McInally, but not Hartley. I would also have Jones instead of Joseph and Hogg instead of Brown but that´s about it. Not sure the Scots front row will get mullered James W. Mako is not the strongest loose head in the tight and Hartley is probably the most over-rated tight forward in the history of the game. Watch how often his head pops out as soon as he is under pressure. I think England should have enough to win, but am b no means confident. Itoje is due a big game in my book, but looked dog tired against Wales.

      1. I know we regularly disagree on Hartley, but come on!?

How many times does he have to have a flawless lineout (which George doesn’t have with less throws) before you can accept he’s a great player?

Also, his scrummaging is massive reason Jones likes him, particularly his ability to strike the ball which is noticeably better when he is on the pitch vs George.

Now, I think Georges carrying stands him above Hartley but to dismiss his ability at the set piece as a hooker is mad. For me, he’s been on the top two/three set pieces hookers in the world for almost a decade. Most international coaches seem to agree.

        1. Gatland clearly doesn’t, and I don’t think he would make the first team of any of the other six nations teams. He certainly throws well, but if that is all you want perhaps Phil “The Power” Taylor could come out of retirement. He plays for England because he would never have got close to being an All Black in his own country, and as someone who played hooker for thirty years I genuinely think that he is over-rated. He became captain as a result of our disastrous performance at the world cup, replacing Youngs who I think would have done just as good a job. I try quite hard to overcome my dislike of him as a cheap shot merchant, but honestly do not rate his all round abilities.

  5. Interesting bench with Grigg and Kinghorn potentially being thrown in the deep end in a tense calcutta cup game against the Auld enemy

  6. Strong Scottish 15, sadly the bench is not as strong as it could be. One question, Tim Vissser. How does he not make this Scottish 23 man squad ? I’m guessing there is beef between him and Townsend ?
