Round one of the Guinness Premiership served up a few surprise results, and of the average community predictions, three were incorrect. Round Two appears to be no easier to predict, but here is a summary of the mood in the SportGuru community.
On Friday night, Worcester Warriors host Leeds Carnegie at Sixways, and the majority of Gurus are expecting a home win. Worcester gave Northampton a fright last weekend at Franklins Gardens, whilst Leeds could manage only a draw against Newcastle, and these results may be influencing the 88% opting for a Warriors win – the average overall pick is Worcester by 6.
If that fixture gets the weekend off to a relatively straightforward start from a predictions point of view, it gets significantly harder on Saturday. Bath will be looking for considerable improvement when London Wasps visit The Rec, whereas Wasps will attempt to build on their victory over Harlequins last week. The SportGuru community is very much divided as to which way this one will go – 44% are predicting a Home win, with 55% favouring a victory for Wasps. The 1% of people that have selected a Draw might just be in the points, given that the average overall pick is Wasps by 1.
When Leicester visit Harlequins on Saturday, they’ll be desperate to avenge their opening round defeat at Sale, whilst the Home side will continue to seek redemption after another weekend to forget in Round 1. 72% of the community are predicting a win for the Tigers, with an average prediction of Leicester by 4.
Saracens will play Northampton at Wembley stadium on Saturday, and the majority of SportGuru players are expecting a ‘Home’ victory. 72% expect Sarries to prevail, representing a significant shift in mindset after only a quarter of people expected them to beat London Irish. The average overall pick is Saracens by 3.
London Irish host Gloucester on Sunday in another fixture that has the community divided. 55% are backing a win for the Exiles, whilst 43% expect Gloucester to build on their strong performance at Kingsholm last weekend. The average prediction is for a winning margin of 0 points, and so the Draw could be the best option for this game.
The final match of the round sees Sale Sharks travel to Newcastle to take on the Falcons. After victory over the Champions in Round 1, Sale appear to be favourites for this game, with 74% expecting an Away win. The average overall pick is Sale by 4.
It appears that matches in Round 2 could be even closer than Round 1, and we should be in for another enthralling Guinness Premiership weekend. Here are the average community predictions:
Game 7: Worcester Warriors v Leeds Carnegie: Worcester Warriors by 6
Game 8: Bath Rugby v London Wasps: London Wasps by 1
Game 10: Saracens v Northampton Saints: Saracens by 3
Game 9: Harlequins v Leicester Tigers: Leicester Tigers by 4
Game 11: London Irish v Gloucester Rugby: Draw
Game 12: Newcastle Falcons v Sale Sharks: Sale Sharks by 4
