Super Rugby returns this weekend, albeit with an abbreviated round featuring two matches from the South African conference. The Aussies and Kiwis get started next weekend, when the competition will be in full swing.
We love Super Rugby, for all its rapid madness, glorious tries, outstanding skills, turnstile defending, and occasionally ludicrous scorelines. We’re ready to go again, and defend the Superbru title this year.
Here are my Super Rugby predictions for Round 1.
Stormers v Jaguares
The Stormers are missing a few old heads, but have some young exciting talent that should be on display at Newlands. It sounds like Damian Willemse will start at fly-half, an exciting talent at just 19, and if he can get the backline moving, we could see some great rugby. The Jaguares are usually tough to beat in Buenos Aires, but weaker away from home, and I think the home team should take this one. Stormers by 9
Lions v Sharks
This should be another home win. Last year’s runners-up have had the better of recent meetings between these sides, and whilst the Sharks are looking stronger this season, the safe pick is with the Lions. The bookies have the Lions by 8, but I actually think they’ll win by a little more. The average winning margin for the last six meetings – all won by the Lions – has been over 11 points, and with the weather looking good in Johannesburg, we should see a few tries. Lions by 16

I’m not so confident about the Lions, Ackermann is gone and Skosan and Jaco Kriel are both injured.

Is Juarno Augustus in the Stormers SupeRugby squad? Loved watching that guy during the U20s

I thought the blog was 100% focused on English rugby now?

Yep, with a few general predictions chucked in. Just like I picked the Ireland v Italy and Scotland v France matches last weekend…
Any objections please let me know!

No objections from me. Nice to get an overview from the rest of the rugby world as well.

Lions by 16? That’s not going to happen. This will be a tight affair with the Lions edging it.

The Jaguares has a new head coach (Mario Ledesma, former Puma and assistant of Cheika) , even that it will take some time to fix all the issues they have it will not be weird that they surprise the Stormers, specially with all the missing players they have

Stormers have named a strong side Leo

I always pick the home teams in the first round or two because the are still trying to find their structures and the home crowd will back them. I predict the stormers by 12 and under. And the Lion’s by at least 12.
0
Lions, not Lion’s.

I will go with the following for round 1 of super rugby.
Stormers 10
Lions 5.
Thanks for a great site for predictions.
