I’m feeling a bit hard-done-by after Round 2, where the 50/50 Waratahs v Stormers game so nearly went my way, but then the Stormers lost their own lineout in the last minute and the Tahs scored a match-winning try after the hooter had sounded.
I also didn’t see the Bulls’ victory coming – not many people did – but we were on the right side of the Rebels v Reds game.
Here are my Super Rugby predictions for Round 3.
Blues v Chiefs
This match was a draw in last year’s competition, and the Chiefs won the previous 11 meetings between the sides. Home advantage is a factor at Eden Park, but the Chiefs don’t have to travel far, and they still look like the stronger team. Chiefs by 4
Reds v Brumbies
A horror start for the Reds last week, with Scott Higginbotham sent off and 45 points conceded to the Rebels. That red card makes their performance harder to judge, but I don’t particularly rate their chances this year, and Higginbotham’s 3-week ban will only make things worse. Meanwhile, the Brumbies edged past the Sunwolves, and they look like the better team. Brumbies by 7
Sunwolves v Rebels
A losing bonus point for the Sunwolves was something of a surprise to most people, but they look like a stronger team this year and they should be more competitive. But the Rebels are stronger too, and are off to a flying start by thrashing the Reds, and they really should win this one. Rebels by 6
Crusaders v Stormers
The Stormers have a very tough tour, and really needed to beat the Waratahs last week – they now face the Crusaders, with the Highlanders to come next weekend. If they can’t beat the Tahs, they won’t beat the Crusaders – they have lost the last six, and have actually never won in Christchurch. Crusaders by 16
Sharks v Waratahs
The last six meetings between these two have been won by the home side, and with the Sharks having played in Round 1 followed immediately by a rest week, they’ll be fresh and raring to go. My instinct says this will be fairly comfortable for the Sharks. Sharks by 13
Bulls v Lions
What a start for John Mitchell’s Bulls, beating the Hurricanes at Loftus, and now they welcome local rivals the Lions to the same fortress. Can they back it up with a win over last year’s runners-up? I’m not so sure, and would like to see some more evidence of the Bulls’ revival before I start backing them. The Lions have scored over 50 points in their last two matches against the Bulls, and whilst I think it will be closer, the Lions should win. Lions by 9
Jaguares v Hurricanes
Did the ‘Canes underestimate the Bulls a little last weekend? Beauden Barrett on the bench suggested a little complacency, and now they have to travel to another tough away match in Buenos Aires. But the Jaguares have been beaten twice already, they have been travelling in South Africa, and I suspect we’ll get a response from the Hurricanes to prove their title credentials. Hurricanes by 18

i’m not confident with the Hurricanes win by 18+. After that stunning upset by the Bulls, it appears the goal-kicker for the Hurricanes has changed. Beauden Barrett was an excellent goal-kicker

I think 18+ is possible, though ~10 seems more likely. Canes will want to bounce back, both traveled from SA, and Jaguares have looked awful thus far.

The Blues looked more compelling than the Chiefs last weekend – backing them for the upset. I’m not sure about a “comfortable” win for Sharks, unless they fixed their front row in the week off.

Blues will smoke the Chiefs and Sunwolves to beat the Rebels

Sharks Waratahs will not be a high scoring game specially not with a three o clock local time kick off , the humidity this time of year makes the ball very slippery and not conducive for running rugby. Sharks with a narrower margin will be a better call. I’m with you backing the Blues Guy.

BULLS WILL BATTLE TO BEAT THE LION’S , BUT IT WILL BE CLOSE MAYBE LIONS BY 5 , OR A LUCKY TRY IN THE LAST 4 MINUTES FOR THE BULLS , GO BOYS GO , GO BULLS GO , BULLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. BULLS ARE ON THE WAY BACK. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Redge, you couldn’t call a correct bet to save your life. Back to the drawing board.

Dramatic finish in the Blues v Chiefs game, but a good start for these predictions…
