The Rugby Blog selects the England team for the Six Nations

It’s time to put yourself in Martin Johnson’s shoes and select your England team from the players named in the Elite Playing Squad last week.

The plan is to leave this running for a week or so, and then put together the ideal team based on The Rugby Blog readers’ opinions. If we had done this before the EPS was announced, there might be some different options, but like Johnno, we need to work with the players we have available.

Tom Croft has been ruled out for at least the start of the Six Nations, so we are able to choose from Chris Robshaw and Phil Dowson, since it likely that one of them will be promoted from the Saxons squad.

Make your selections, and then leave any relevant comments below. Send this on to your friends as well – the more votes there are, the more Johnno will have to listen to us. Don’t forget to press ‘Vote’ after each poll.

  1. Looking through the results, I can easily see the actual selected team being the least popular players in each category in this poll!

  2. Chose “other” for LH prop and wing, as Sheridan won’t make it, I thought? So I would have Nick Wood, as he was capped last year, and is promising. On the wing, I would have Chris Ashton, as he is the best attacker of the wings (apart from Monye) and is in the EPS in place of the injured Vickery.

  3. Since Sheridan won’t play in the Six Nations, the only possible option is Payne unless he breaks a fingernail this weekend and has to be out for a couple of months.

I’ve still yet to be convinced about Hartley and would be tempted to pick Mears (I’m sure Hutch agrees!)

Cueto on one wing as the safe option (good boot, solid defender, decent finisher), but due to his shocking lack of pace lately, it would have to be a speedster like Monye (who looked good at the weekend finally) or Ashton on the other wing. Probably the latter. Foden needs to sort out his positioning and defense, he still makes costly errors in the Abendanon mould so I (and I suspect Johnno) wouldn’t hesitate starting Armitage.

We badly need an outside centre. Clarke looks a good bet. But Hipkiss will have to do I suppose.

Big fan of Flood but his place kicking has been a bit dodgy lately I think, so will probably see Wilkinson get the starting shirt.

Haskell/Moody/Easter back row. Flutey back in and Wilson at tighthead with White on the bench.

  4. Love this. I’m surprised by how much it almost picks itself… Although I laugh, cos that’s me saying that, and not the Martin Johnson way of it.

Lawes and Shaw would be a revelation if picked, and I was torn between Armitage and Foden to start.

Hear a full preview to England & the 6 Nations, in the “Rugby Blog 6 Nations Podcast” released Monday 1st Feb.

  5. Give Ashton a chance on the wing.
Try Armitage and Flutey in centres…..Armitage at outside centre.Monye on other wing
Gerraghty at 10 Care at 9 (shame Simpson is injured)
    Foden at 15

Mullan Hartley White at the coal face
Shaw and Lawes 4 and 5
Haskell,Moody and Easter in the back row. Easter as captain.

  6. Sheridan
    Hartley
    Dan Cole (Leicester)
    Shaw
    Lawes
    Robshaw
    Moody
    Haskell

    Hodgson
    Flood
    Flutey
    Tait
    Ashton
    Monye
    Armitage

  7. Sorry folks, not sure how I forgot to put Ashton in the poll. ‘Other’ is still a fair way behind Cueto and Monye though. I may have looked at a list written before he was added to the squad.

I’ll assume any ‘Other’ votes are for Ashton.

  8. With who has been selected, this would be the team i’d like to see play

    1. Sheridan
    2. Hartley
    3. Wilson
    4. Lawes
    5. Shaw
    6. Croft
    7. Moody
    8. Haskell
    9. Hodgson
    10. Wilkinson
    11. Ashton
    12. Flutey
    13. Hape
    14. Cueto
    15. Armitage

    16. Mears
    17. Payne (should be Cole)
    18. White (should be Golding)
    19. Easter
    20. Care (should be Simpson)
    21. Flood
    22. Tait
    23. Foden

However, from what I’ve heard, Croft is out, as is Sheridan. In that case I’d promote Cole to the EPS and start him with Wilson. I’d also have Haskell at 6 and Easter at 8, with Robshaw or Armitage on the bench – or I’d promote Kennedy to the EPS, and have him partner Shaw, with Lawes, Moody and Haskell in the back row, with Robshaw or Armitage on the bench

  9. 1. Sheridan
    2. Hartley
    3. Wilson
    4. Lawes
    5. Crane
    6. Robshaw

    18. Mears
    19. Haskell
    20. Hodgson
    21. Wilkinson
    22. Foden

  10. Cole
    Hartley
    Wilson
    Shaw
    Lawes
    Haskell
    Easter
    Moody

    Care
    Flood
    Ashton
    Flutey
    Tait
    Cueto
    Armitage

Must have guys like Foden, Youngs, Geraghty on the bench to make an impact off the nech if needed, Youngs had a nightmare against the ospreys, geraghty didn’t play well against munster although I thought Hartley had a very good game. Hodgson was aweful against Leinster, one of the reasons they lost the match.
